Side effects of Noradrenaline-Serotonin Specific Antidepressants

Just wondering if anyone has experience taking Noradrenaline-Serotonin Specific Antidepressants? I've been on this medication for 2 weeks now and am feeling better already however I have huge concerns with one of it's side effects - weight gain. Currently I'm not overweight and have a BMI of 22.  I don't exercise on a  regular basis but am prepared to increase physical activity to minimise any increased weight associated with this medication. I guess my cause for concern is my age. Being forty it's easier to put weight on and harder to lose it. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

dear Elle, I actually have been taking one of these medications for my epilepsy, however I believe that it is supposed to help OCD and depression.

I've been taking it for 17 odd years and although I'm a large boned type person I haven't put on any weight, and I'm oops 59 years old, so this may not be the case for you.

Some side-effects don't necessarily happen to everyone, that is if I take pill A and have too many problems, that doesn't mean that another person will have the same side-effects. Good luck and let us know. L Geoff. x

Hi Elle. I am new to the forum and was browsing when I saw your post.  I have been taking one of these medications for almost a year.  I too was concerned about the weight gain side effect but to date things have been fine.  I exercise regularly and am careful what I eat so that helps. I get the occasional chocolate craving, not sure if that is related to the med. good luck

Just an update to those reading my posts. I decided to make an appointment with my GP to discuss concerns I have with the medication I am taking to treat my depression, in particular one of its adverse side effects which is weight gain. My GP was fantastic! Completely understood what I was saying in regards to gaining weight at my age. We discussed options and decided I should use the medication PRN (as required) and continue seeing my psychologist on a weekly basis. I know I respond well to cognitive therapy as I have used this method in the past to treat anxiety and panic attacks. I feel so 'in control' at the moment. The medication is helping me sleep and keeping my thoughts from racing whilst my psychologist is helping me deal with stressors in my life. I trust my GP and feel safe in his care.
