Hi Meatballs. It's great you've decided to ask for help. Are you seeing your regular Dr, if you are, he/she may know your history re: nerves/anxiety. If you're seeing a new Dr, all you have to do is explain why you would like to see a psychologist. I think there's a possibility you may have to fill out a mental health form (don't quote me). There's no way they will say you're over-reacting. Anyone going to ask for any referral is asked what the problem is so that the referring Dr knows who to refer you to. If, for instance, you want marriage counselling, the Dr refers you to a marriage counsellor. In your case, once you explain why you're nervous, or give maybe a scenario where you felt nervous, your Dr will make sure he sends you to a psychologist who can help you best. There are many psychologists for many problems. Are you on AD's, it's possible you may be prescribed them to help you relax. Tell your Dr you're nervous about seeing the psych, he possibly will make a note for the psych. This is also to help you.
Lynda.

Hi Meatballs!
Thank you for reaching out with your question!
You have not provided any background to your need for a psychologist, but typically if you present with a case of possible mental health issues the (good) doctor will ask you to complete a checklist (K10) to establish whether there is a cause for intervention. The next step would be for the doctor to sign you up for a mental health plan, which gives you (at least) 10 free sessions with a psychologist. They may suggest one that they are affiliated with. But I would suggest that you do your own homework and find one that you feel comfortable with. Finding the righ psych is absolutely critical to your recovery - you must be able to 'gel'.
This was a rough and ready summary of what to expect - but please feel free to explore with any questions at all. Will be here!

Hello Meatballs
Welcome to the beyond blue community. My name is Paul and have had severe anxiety for many years.
I do understand where you are coming from. Anxiety symptoms can be a mongrel to have.
You have great strength and courage to post. Good on You for doing so!
Most of the GP's nowadays have the training/knowledge to help and guide you through this difficult period. Please remember that you are the patient here and they are the caregiver. Anxiety disorder is the same as a physical problem...it needs treatment and care.
You are strong and not over reacting in anyway whatsoever. Please dont be nervous....I was 23 when I was first diagnosed with anxiety disorder and it can be treated with regular visits to a GP/Counselor.
The severity of your symptoms will decrease with the care you deserve
There is also some great info listed below on this page under the header 'The Facts' You will see the topic 'Anxiety and depression checklist'
Anxiety is a serious matter that you arent over-reacting to in anyway. I admire you for reaching out to us on the forums as well as wanting to heal yourself with a referral to a counselor.
What normally happens? Your GP will ask you how you are and how you have been feeling. Just normal questions. I see my GP for a 'anxiety check up' every few months....I see him as a gift....
Depending on your symptoms your GP may offer you some temporary medication before seeing a counselor.
You are a legend by posting and thankyou 🙂 If you have any other questions you are more than welcome to post as many times as you wish!
I do hope you can post back when you can
Kind Thoughts
Paul
