Hi,
I've had a return of mental health symptoms recently and have restarted medication under guidance from my GP.
The main cause of my issues I believe is my job. Just today a job has been advertised which I am going to apply for.
I take medication daily. I have done a urine test I bought from the pharmacy and it shows positive for benzo.
My worry is that the medication I've been taking is going to make me fail a drug test. I'd rather not disclose my mental health issues for fear of not getting a look in.
I might have a week or two before needing to do a drug test (if I am even successful). I think I'll stop the medication.. I haven't been on it long term yet.
If I disclose my medication to the medical group performing the test, can they remove any false positive? After all the employer is only meant to test for alcohol and illicit drugs.
Does anybody have any advice?
Really appreciate it.

Hi Chemical Inbalance,
A warm welcome to the forums.
From the employer's point of view, they would be interested to know about the drugs that has been taken in order to create a safe workplace. Say for example, if the job is for a long distance vehicle driving that requires tremendous amount of alert and sharpness on the road, an employer would have to be cautious about people taking benzo, due to the side-effects of benzo. Another example would be, if the job is to operate a very dangerous machinery that also requires focus, benzo may put the workplace at risk.
I'm not sure what advise I can give you regarding your current situation. But if I were an employer, I'd like to know a few key points about the person that I'm hiring, to make sure they are a good fit to the company. If they're honest about their situation, I will take it into consideration when making the decision. But not all employers are considerate about a person's situation, since the primary focus of hiring would be "Can they deliver effectively to the business or not?".
An alternative would be to assess what is it that's triggering your mental health issues at your current work place, and see if something can be done about it. If there's absolutely nothing that can be done to make you feel better at your work place, then you'll have to consider making that switch in companies, with a chance that the other company may pry you about your reason for taking benzo. Whether you choose to be honest about it or not, will be up to you. But I wish you all the best with whichever decision you choose to make, and always here for you if you'd like to chat more.
