I suffer from severe major Depressive Disorder, severe primary insomnia and severe generalised anxiety disorder, but I can't afford to go to the psychologist or psychiatrist as my GP has referred; what do I do?

Dear Ariel  (and I'm surprised a full name is used as anonymity is valued),

You need to find a psychologist or psychiatrist that bulk bills.    It might be a question of photocopying a list of such therapists at your GP (Medicare) and then spending a day phoning all of them to ascertain which bulk bill.

Sometimes, even one that charges will consider lowering their fees to help out.  I think the initial appraisal is the most costly - say $250 - and after that things even out.    I got such a situation earlier this year and only had to pay approx $80.

I would look outside your area too - what's a 1 hr bit of travel (on a DSP card) if you can get in to see a psychologist/psychiatrist and get the fee covered with bulk billing ?

Also, it might take you a few attempts to find the right fit.   You sound a bit desparate but don't be too desparate.  You want to have a long term solution.

Adios, David.

dear Ariel, has your doctor mentioned about the 12 free visits to see a psychologist, which can be done every year, and I'm sure that other people will also mention this, but ring your doctor and ask him/her.

Some psychiatrists bulk bill which you can also check out, but as you are suffering from these types of depression you should do this as soon as you can.

Google 'Reachout.com' as they may also be helpful. Please let us know how you get on. Geoff.
