Mum wants me to use natural remedies instead of a therapist

So I was diagnosed with social anxiety and PTSD by my gp early ire this year, and my mum has also been diagnosed with anxiety many years prior. I was given a referral to a therapist but the practice is private so the sessions would be very expensive. My mum insists that because she has had years of experience with anxiety, and can help me with natural remedies, and that all a therapist does is give you strategies, and while i don't expect her to pay for the expensive sessions, i'm just curious if it's actually helpful and healthy for me to be 'treated' as such by my mum?

Does anyone have any advice or experience with natural remedies? do they work?

hi there and welcome to BB

ive heard magnesium and B12 are really good natural remedies to help with anxiety etc but maybe try speaking to a naturopath who specialises in this area for medication type things. i was on magnesium for a while and did find it useful for energy.

if your mum can help you that would be very great but if you think you would rather speak to a psychologist then maybe ask your gp for a mental health care plan. theres a possible chance that since you were referred there, you might be entitled to the medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions..

Hi, welcome

I think Starting New has some good ideas.

I found when I had anxiety a micture of remedies was best for me.

Good diet, lots of greens

No smoking, drinking alcohol in excess

Distractions like hobbies and sports

Not tolerating toxic nasty people

Relaxation classes

hi and welcome.

What I would be doing is go back to your doctor and ask them about the mental health plan, this entitles you to 10 free visits to see the psych, it's worth doing.
There has always been a discussion on natural remedies compared to prescription drugs and the natural tablet which is suggested to help people with anxiety/depression is for the person to say yes or no, however I was advised that it may only help with mild anxiety/depression.
You need to know that your mum's anxiety maybe different to how you are feeling.
I would go and ask your pharmacist, but I will realise they will favour prescription drugs over natural remedies. Geoff.

Yeah definitely look after yourself naturally through exercise, eating right, etc. (a health professional would generally recommend you do that anyway). And it's great to have family members who are willing to help and support you.

But keep in mind that therapists are trained professionals. Many people have benefitted from them.

Also, it can be good to have someone you can talk to about things you may not necessarily feel comfortable talking to close family members about.
