Looking for a start

Hi all, I’m not sure if I’m posting in the right section or not. I’m currently struggling with my mental health and have been overseas for about a year and am set to return to Aus in a couple of weeks. When I get back I need to start looking at dealing with my mental health. I’ve been putting it to the side for years because I’ve been scared to talk about it, but I’m finding that I’m having a harder time dealing with it. I’m not really sure where to start looking when I get back. I’m from a country town so there isn’t much around. Do I start by making an appointment with a doctor? Or do I look for a psychologist? I’m hoping someone may be able to show me where I need to start. Thanks.

Hello AzaleaThorn, welcome to the site.

Moving back to Australia would mean there is much you need to consider, but yes you need to find a doctor either in the area you live or not too far away, who can then put you on a 'mental health plan', which entitles you to 20 Medicare paid sessions per year talking with either a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

You may also want to contact Centrelink and when you receive payments, you can get them to ay the bond money for a new residence as well as two weeks rent, which you pay off over time.

Depending on what furniture you have, the op shops can help you out and any whitegoods etc can be purchased on terms, but the doctor is someone you have to like and who understands what you are struggling with.

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear you are struggling. I hope that you have enjoyed your time overseas if you went for travel purposes. Well done for recognising that you need to get some help.

You can see your GP in Australia and get a referral for a mental health care plan and psychologist. You can then book appointments with the psychologist. You will get up to 20 sessions partially rebated by medicare if you are an Aus citizen. There may be a few weeks' wait, there is high demand at the moment. Then hopefully they will be able to help. Don't be scared, it is their job.

All the best,

Jaz xx
