Supporting a parent of a suicide attempt

Hopeful99
Community Member
I have personal experience of suicide through family, however recently I have a very close friend who is dealing with the suicide attempt of her child. I don't know what to say or do. After so long of many lock downs and being a front line worker, she was already 'spent', let alone going through this. I don't know what to say.

Hi Hopeful99, Really glad you’re getting in touch and reaching out. This sounds really distressing for your friend, and for you trying to support her. Figuring out the right words can be a difficult process, and it’s very normal to not know what to say. We encourage you to contact the Suicide Callback Service or (if in the state) SuicideLine Victoria to get some support and advice for helping your friend, and also support for you. You can also pass these numbers on to your friend and her child to help get support and figure out next steps. Thank you for reaching out to us and we hope you also find some support and solace here in the forums.

hello and welcome.

firstly, follow the advice of the Sophie_M!

It is clear you care very much for them. Sometimes saying little is OK. That is, just listening and not providing any advice. Being there for them! (I hope that makes sense) What you said at the end of your post would be OK. Saying "I'm here for you" or "I love you". Even "You OK?" and allow for honesty.
