Walking and Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Hey Kaitoa

So how many days to you fast? Like one day a week? I have been looking into that myself. More from a "healing the body reasons", and detox. Like I have read when you fast, like you only drink water then your body uses the energy to repair and heal itself rather then using that same energy for digestion. I haven't met anyone personally who has undertaken this, just read about it. Is that why you are fasting or have you heard anything about that? I would be interested to know your thoughts there.

Shell,

The only reason I do this is for healing the body reasons, so I totally get that.

I have done intermittent fasting now for over 12 months.

I feel much "lighter" now - I used to feel heavy and bloated a lot of the time.

I lived with body-dysphoria, so I had hated on myself for much of my childhood and adult life.

Body image and health were all caught up in the mix, for me.

You're right about water aiding with the whole process.

But, we don't 'need' to 'detox' the body, as such. The body naturally detoxes itself. It's a bit of a myth, the whole body needs to detox talk.

If you're body is needing more 'detoxing' than the body can actually handle, that's very abnormal, and that's when we speak to a Professional that we trust.

Don't suffer in silence, like me!

But, I'd like to also share about the science behind intermittent fasting -

12 hours after your last meal your body will go into ketosis.

This is when the body has no glucose-energy and needs to draw energy from somewhere else.

Fat is just stored energy.

The body-mind will draw the energy needed, from fat-stores.

Intermittent fasting is more natural for humans, and if you really want to keep the body detoxing properly, fasting in this way really helps.

There are different things that you can do with this, design a way to incorporate fasting into your life naturally.

Eating should still be something that is enjoyed, and not a chore.

I eat twice a day.

I have my first meal after 1pm, and my second meal before 9pm...most days!

I only eat when I am hungry.

I eat whatever I want. But I generally eat more whole foods now, than junk foods.

I eat consciously.

I stop eating when I feel 80% full.

7 days a week.

I'm also eliminating all sucrose-sugar from my diet.

This is a biggie too Shell, if you're interested in keeping the body healthy eliminate all sucrose-sugar, refined and processed sugars and non-foods from your diet, you will not regret it.

Stay alkalised as well...cancer, for example, can not grow in an alkaline environment.

Any questions or anything you'd like to chat about in terms of body wellness, I'm down for that as well!

Thank you ever so much for the that Kaitoa, I get what you are saying. And I will definitely take you up on the offer to ask you more questions if I find I have more.

Hi I wrote yesterday but my post is missing don't know what happened. Yesterday & today I had to drop my husband off near the station so I left the car there and walked. I climbed up a very steep road which leads to some steps & ends up at a road following the ridge. I like to turn around when I reach the steps to catch my breath & look at the view of the mountain opposite. I did a loop walk back to my car each day choosing slightly different routes. I was extremely tired today as I had to get up early to help my husband get ready. Tuesday I got up a little later & had fallen asleep early Mon night after my medical procedure so I wasn't as tired in the morning. I was pleased I did the walk as well as I did considering how tired I was. I think today I will take it easy & try to recover. I see the GP next Monday to get results of all the tests.

Good luck everyone & enjoy your walking & exercise

Hi there to all the 'walkers' here. I just found this thread as I was taking a browse through BB this morning. This could be the perfect opportunity to join up with you good people, and get a bit of support and encouragement to get into some regular exercise activities again.

I've recently been diagnosed with PTSD and I have been encouraged to start doing regular exercise as it apparently helps. I am a little restricted however as I have a significant chronic injury, so I need to be careful about what activities I can do these days.

I can usually manage a decent walk however, so that will be my starting point. I also joined a local gym recently with a 10 pass membership. That was about a month ago though, and I havent been there yet. Silly me. They have a class there once a week though which interests me. Its a combination class of Yoga and Pilates, so I think that would be the best one to try. My GP suggests Yoga for my mind, and my physiotherapist recommends Pilates for my body. So I figure a combination of both will be good for both mind and body? Does anybody here know much about these classes? I have done Pilates in the past and find it quite good, but never done Yoga.

Anyway, I have been feeling pretty low lately and have gotten out of the habit of regular exercise. Once you stop, it just seems so hard to get back into again. So I think the encouragement offered through this thread will be of assistance.

Shelley anne - I have seen you in another thread that I write on. The mindfulness one (5 things) if I recall correctly. So hello again to you.

Kaitoa - of course I know you ............ you're everywhere! Love it.

Elizabeth CP - nice to meet you. And good on you for doing the walk that you did. Every little bit helps I guess.

I look forward to getting into this exercise game again, and reporting back to you all. I feel an obligation now. (-:

I have very good walking shoes - but they cost almost $200 which is a hit to the hip pocket!

I walk daily. Some days the anxiety is too high to get out the front door, so then I walk up and down the lane at the back of my house.

I much prefer to walk in bushland. I fall quite often on footpaths in the suburbs which is embarrassing and painful. I walk at the beach weekly, and go to beach groups, although they are less active. I also used to live on a few acres. But even a walk around the block (18acres) was only a 20 minute walk. Not nearly enough to sustain a healthy body. It was quieter / simpler than city life but very easy to isolate and not push enough for exercise. It is much easier to exercise and find healthy food in the inner city.

I have found QiGong recently and love it. It is fantastic. But It does release a manic energy for me if I do it too much - and I am trying to balance this. If anyone has experience with meditative practices releasing aggressive energy please contact me.

I did gyms daily for years when I was "diagnosed". It was not helpful at all - we should not push for things we hate, instead find what we enjoy. Pushing yourself too hard is not so good either. The benefits they claim are not all wonderful.

When the akathisia hits bad, I need to pace. I have a length of flooring that I got up and down pacing on just to try help the symptoms. The mat was new at the start of the year but it is worn thin now! Its very difficult to handle needing to move all of the time.

Evening Folks!

Bundy and I did our nightly walk.

All good there.

Was a slow start to the day.

Feeling motivated now though...I'm going to be working at The Woodford festival...mega-excited about that!

How is everyone else going?

CheeseSlices - I have a few techniques that I use. I have had issues with anger-management in the past, so if you'd like, I am more than happy to send through a few 'tricks' that have helped me!

Your other post is there now Elizabeth. How are you feeling today, did you get the opportunity to rest up a bit? That steep hill sounds like the other one you wrote about earlier on in the year. The one with the ridge and the view. Nice......

Hey there Taurus,

I am sorry you have been feeling low lately. I do understand. And yeah it can be a challenge to get back into the habit of exercise again, especially when one is feeling low.

Pilates sounds like a good idea, a dear friend of mine use to do that. She said it was good for your core. I am guessing that is like your back muscles or posture. She did tell me a bit about it, but I cannot remember exactly what she said. And it is a gentle on one's body too. Anyway good on you!

Hope you go.

And yes indeed I remember you from the other thread. And hello to you again.

Oh what a great profile name there CheeseSlices, it has a smiley feel to it. Love it!

Totally agree, choose something that you will like doing. Makes it so much easier to stick with. My shoes cost about that as well. "Nike airs" I think they are called. I have had them almost a year. I find they help me to walk because they don't hurt my feet one bit and they are super comfortable and light.

That is great you are walking once a day. I am thinking you must be pretty fit. I have never heard of Qigong. You have me curious, so I will probably "google" it now to find out exactly what it is.

And thanks for helping me to smile with your name there.
