Dear All~
What this place is for:
This thread is a tool, a resource, and also I guess a dash of entertainment.
I’ve found that when life is grim that sometimes thoughts of past happiness can create a chink of light in the grey overwhelming press of down. They can help occupy the mind with lighter reflections.
With that in view I invite people to set down a brief passage describing some happy event they look back to with fondness and peace.
They - and others too - can then return to it when they feel the need to glean a little warmth.
It is not a place for gloomy or dire tales, those can go elsewhere.
What to do:
Just set out, as simply as you like, your recollection of some past experience that means something good to you, something you enjoyed, something from safe times.
It can be, like my story below, anything – from an account of visiting grandparents to simply cooking and eating a melted-cheese sandwich in a favorite kitchen – you get to choose.
How to do it:
Write. Write enough so someone else can feel the mood, know what happened, find the goodness. (stop at 2,500 characters please!)
Grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation are not compulsory, just write as you can – the only important thing is the content - not literary merit. Short or long - it does not matter.
I hope you enjoy, contribute and find a little distraction here when you need it.

A random happy memory has come to mind.
We were on holidays overseas in an Asian country. I really enjoy walking through the markets and seeing all the different foods and produce for sale.
One particular village was known for cigar making. I watched as two cheerful looking older women squatted down amongst their produce and both pulled out huge cigars and lit them.
One of the ladies started to choke and cough. I had a smile on my face, she smiled back and we both laughed. She reached out with the cigar and indicated that I might like to try it. I gave her a big smile and declined her offer. Our tour group was moving on.

Dear All~
I don't know what reminded me but we used to enjoy a regular Saturday night at the drive-in, something mostly out of the pages of history now.
My friend who had a Land rover with a
cabin built on the back, the first Mrs. C and our offspring in our car. We would
park next to each other and all the kids would pile in the bed inside the top
of the Land rover and view the screen though a Perspex window.
We adults
sat in out own vehicles, with speakers on cords hanging inside our windows.
It was a cosy
enclosed world, engine running if it was cold, windows open if hot. Even rain
did not spoil things.
Then at intermission
we would go to the kiosk and by food - deep-fried everything - from hot dogs in
batter to banana fritters. We would return, kids covered in ice-cream and we adults
recovering from having eaten too unwisely, if too well.
Always a regret
when the final credits rolled and we had
to drive over the bumps and queue to exit (having hopefully remembered to unhook
the speaker).

You forgot the kid hiding on the floor, in the back, with blankets piled over, hoping no-one would suspect you were trying to not pay for at least one of them...more if they were little kids.
I remember heading out, lying in the back, looking up & out the windows, at the streetlights as we passed them by.
Thanks Croix. My memories are mixed, so that's all I'll say here.

I have sketchy memories of the drive in in Alice Springs. On a hot night, people would put deck chairs out the front of their cars, some with utes had old bench seats they sat on in comfort in front of the ute, sometimes on the bonnet.
When the wind blew you could here all the drink cans rolling around. Now and then a freight train would go past and the movie would be stopped until we could hear again.
These are my memories. If they are accurate or not, I don't know anymore! I'm talking a while ago!

I remember going to the drive in with my parents. We were never babysat so this was a way for them to have a night out. We sat in the back enjoying being out late. Too happy to misbehave. Occasionaly we would get a treat at the cafe. Small icecreams in cardboard you pushed out onto your bowl and then put on whatever toppings you liked. The only time I remember it raining was during a sad movie so it enhanced the experience. Watching a sad scene in the rain made it feel sadder
I remember the speaker hanging on the window.

Dear Elisabeth~
It's good to hear from you. I'm afraid movies have changed now, a pity. Instead of going out in the car it's a much more impersonal thing.
Nevertheless there are advantages. Mrs C and I spent a most enjoyable afternoon together sitting in the kitchen watching Christmas Specials on DVDs by British comedians from the 70's
“Now it's goodnight from me,” “and it's goodnight from him”
A happy memory made today.

Today I am making sure to store a very happy memory that happened recently.
My partner surprised me with a beautiful ring for Christmas. He designed it himself and everything! I was so touched - I already have my engagement ring but he wanted to give me another special ring which was so thoughtful (and completely unexpected). I know he has been working so hard to afford it.

Dear Missep123~
Thank you for reminding me. Rings can be very special thngs, not only as an adornment one can enjoy, but also as a permanent reminder of the person who gave it, and the circumstances.
I'd been away for four months (which neither of us liked) on a course and in returning afterwards was met by the late Mrs C in Melbourne where we spent a couple of days. Towards the end of that most happy time she steered me to a jewelers shop and sat me down. The jeweler brought out a ring, it was a perfect fit (how Mrs C found my size I've no idea).
Chosen be her and worn by me ever since, and even 40 or so years later when I look at it my memories of that course and the return to love and caring come back fresh as when I first felt them.
