Manipulation done by my dad

My dad put me down for talking like an 8 year old today! All I said before all this was that I wanted a hotchocolate, I just felt like it okay, and then he tried to manipulate me by proving that my tone of voice was sounded like an 8 year old and told me that my grandma told me the same thing as what he was saying which I never recall happening . Any tips for situations like this, stuff like this happends alot. Oh and before that he told me I was being rough when I was putting vegies on my tacos! What is the go with people like this?? I recorded multiple conversations of him manipulating me when he told me I was speaking like an 8 year old today! I stood up and told him that if he continues this he will make me sicker more than I already am.

I feel you. Legit at 13 I still was spoken and treated like a 5 year old. Putting veggies on tacos is healthy and an awesome thing to do. You are not alone:

Hi Roses_191

I've found that some people can't keep their opinions or observations to themself. It's kinda like they have to say so much of what they're thinking or observing out loud. There can be a number of reasons as to why people can have such a nature. While some people mean no harm, they're just saying what they're thinking or observing (such as with the case of someone who can be on the autism spectrum), others can feel entitled to say whatever they want. I must say that I'm not a fan of self entitled people, especially ones who don't care how they lead others to feel. For some others, it's the way they were raised, with their parent doing it to them and they unknowingly adopted the same habit. There can be a whole stack of reasons.

With a number of people, they may not be aware of how we're feeling their remarks but we can lead them to become more aware. For example

  • I feel that remark or comment as being degrading. It feels degrading
  • I feel what you said to be upsetting in some way. It feels upsetting
  • I feel much of what you say to be critical/stressful/depressing/irritating etc (take your pick, whichever suits the comments or remarks)

and the list goes on. Some people may try to get a feel for where we're coming from and genuinely apologise with something like 'I can see where you're coming from now. I'm sorry'. There are some people who just don't care though. They don't care enough to try and gain a sense of how the comment might feel for us. Then you've got the kinds of people who might even say 'You're too sensitive, you need to toughen up' (grrr😠). While I used to feel ashamed of being sensitive, nowadays I'm inclined to say 'Heck, yeah, I'm sensitive. How else do you think I can sense what you just said to me?!'😁

I think it's okay to question in certain ways such as with 'Why do you feel the need to say that to me?' or 'What leads you to not keep that thought to yourself?' or 'How do you imagine I feel about that comment?'. It's especially hard when a 'sensitive' lives with a 'non sensitive' or insensitive person. While a non sensitive person can sense very little of what they say, a sensitive will sense just about all of it.
