Numb for years after abuse and toxic family/friends

Hi All,

I was reading some of the threads and was impressed by people's honesty.
So I decided to start a new thread to share myself what I have been through.

Last year I got very unwell and had to get mental health help from the public hospital. I was suicidal.

I had no friends, was crumbling, living alone and developed horrible body dsymorphia. I looked in the mirror and was disgusted.
I couldn't believe things could get so bad, like that you can kind of just die while still living. i was not taking care of myself and was a zombie at work. I told a few people I was suicidal and they didn't care.

My family haven't been there for me at all, although I have one sibling who tries.

A family member abused me verbally for years and destroyed my self esteem, and I'm only now putting together the pieces.
I'm very numb. I keep hearing the word disacociating (terrible spelling) - ---and a light is going onfor me, it feels like the right word for what i've felt. I think that was a part of how I survived for years, by disaccoiating.

I used to have friends and go out a lot but slowly I just narrowed my life down to myself, and I was alone all the time, and very sad.
It became normal and I just pushed through it, until one day I couldn't any more.

The triage was very helpful and pointed me to a group that helps people who are suicidal.... anyway.... i'm still here and feeling like i have a new lease on life. I do want to be here, altough the trauma still weighs me down sometimes.

Hey Sleepy

I think I'm watching the 3rd season of Ozarks. It's pretty heavy. I think Arrested Dev is a comedy? And yes, Jason Bateman is one of those guys that doesn't age - hilarious!

I hope your day today is a good one. I've started mine with a dog walk and the weather is pretty gorgeous. Take care, Katy

Hi 2quik... It is very hard now, because depression looks like what I'm being asked to do! Staying alone in my apartment with my thoughts, not leaving at all, being alone and not seeking company. That looks like depression, and that is now being heralded as the right way to cope... I feel more burdened by what's inside me than the restrictions, a lot of my old stuff is coming up.

Choosing carefully is so important. I had a chat to a friend now who I'm generally a bit wary of, but took the call, and found it weighed on me a lot. It's hard because everyone's struggling, and sometimes the stress transfers. She was putting me down a bit and telling me that I have a long way to go in recovery. Lol. Cheers.

Thanks for comments on my confidence. I hope you are taking it easy in these externally hectic times...

Hi Katy - I was just reading about Ozarks, looks pretty good. Laura Linney is amazing. I think that's the name of the blonde actress?

I thought it was about something sci-fi related for some odd reason, but I can see it's more a drama/thriller about money laundering? Seems like good watching, good distraction...
Arrested is a comedy and kind of absurd...It's the first time I saw Jason Bateman so whenever I see him I think of his character in Arrested.... I love his forehead wrinkles lol, he's great to watch.

hard to cope... people keep reaching out to me in ways that make me feel unsafe.
I just feel like I have to alwys keep conversation light and bubbly or people will reject me. Deathly silence when I try and be myself.

A member of my family who threatened and terrified me for most of my life contacted me today (an email).
I scanned it - just the first line, something about these crazy times, and then deleted it.
1 email anywy after I was hospitalised etc. this is the first contact i've had with this person for 6 months.
I'm glad i deleted it. I don't want to open that door now and there's only pain etc behind it.

Hey sleepy,

I am glad you deleted that email. Well done. You certainly don't need this person to come at you right now.

Is there a possibility that you can block this person so you no longer receive these emails?

If you cannot be yourself with someone then they are not worth having around and if they treat you with silent treatment then you know perhaps it's time to do the same. Not silent treatment exactly, just no longer engaging with them anymore?

Hey to anyone on this forum,

Just had a therpay session, therapist said I've experienced a lot of emotional abuse.
It does effect you to be threatened and traumatised when you grow up - I am having a fair bit of flash backs and some suicidal ideation. I'm safe, but it all comes to the surface sometimes, and then I can't sleep. I'm so upset about the sleep

It is so frustrating and sucky and horrible to not be able to rely on a calm and comforting sleep.
