Doctors, trust and PTSD

I am finding it really hard to trust doctors and medical staff. They are "over" working with people who have mental conditions and their "tough love" approach and the way they talk about me, rather than to me really makes me angry like they think their big words are too hard for idiots to understand. They are mostly angry and constantly serious and if you try to insert humor to lighten the mood they look at me like I am from another planet. I don't like the view they have of themselves and they think they are so much better than everyone else. I feel totally hopeless and the feeling of doom never goes away. I feel like I will never find love, a home or peace. Instead all I have is constant and total isolation from anyone other than them, fear and and total misunderstanding from others

Hi Glennyboy,

I agree that it can be difficult to find a health professional that you can trust. It took me a long time to find a GP that I can talk to and who will put up with my health anxieties and explain things to me when I ask instead of expecting me to accept their diagnosis / recommendations blindly.

It can be really frustrating when it feels like health professionals aren't listening or speaking down to you.

Sometimes I find the volunteers who man the Beyond Blue phone line a lot more sympathetic and understanding. Maybe because they have gone through it themselves?

Kind thoughts, Jess

Hi Glennyboy,

Welcome to the community here on the forum. From what you have written, I am wondering if you are needing to see mental health personnel frequently?

A while ago I was in a mental health unit for two weeks. I found a lot of the staff appeared unable to have empathy for what was going on around them. Some were very snappy and rude. I believe some of them were burnt out. I also think having been exposed to so many people's issues made some of them unable to see individuals any longer.

I have called the receptionist at a medical centre and asked if they can recommend a Dr that is able to deal with mental health issues. Some centres also have web sites where Drs describe issues they are interested in.

The Beyond Blue web site and the phone help line may be able to help you find services and suitable Drs in your area.

Sometimes we have to keep trying like Jess mentioned to find a Dr who will help us.

If you feel comfortable, you might like to share more of your feelings around find love, a home and peace.

We are not professionals here, so all we can offer is suggestions and ideas. It does help to write down how you are feeling if you want to.

Cheers to you from Dools
