Childhood Trauma

My dad was abusive to both my mum and stepmum. I have witnessed many fights that he started with them. It was very traumatic for me and I only got diagnosed with depression and anxiety at the beginning of this year. Is anyone in the same situation as me?

Yes I had the same, my dad was abusive to my mum and my step mum too. Myself, my brother and sister all were treated poorly as well. I'm beginning therapy tomorrow after being told I have PTSD. How are you feeling?

Yes, when I was young my father was abusive, and so was my mother for a few years when I was in my teens. It had a huge affect on me at the time and I fell into a number of other abusive relationships. I'm struggling with a number of things at the moment: worthlessness, shame, isolation, and a feeling of not knowing who I am or what I'm supposed to do with my life. Do either of you feel these feelings?

I actually didn’t know that childhood trauma was an issue leading to ptsd. I started becoming aware of it recently when I finally put them together. All my life I’ve suffered horrendous nightmares of a man leaning over me and being so threatening. I believe now that suffering awful abuse from my father for all my childhood and teen years is the cause. He was also violent to my mother and my brother. I’m now entering elderly age group and am still incredulous that this, ptsd, is what I’ve been going through. Is this really possible?

Hi Sojourner

My understanding is that long term, inescapable child abuse lends itself to Complex PTSD, not just PTSD. But then i don't know your history. You may want to do a little research on this.

I have CPTSD and it affects every aspect of my life.

Keep in touch.

Thank you, I appreciate your reply. I’ll look into it further. I didn’t know there was a Complex PTSD.
