This bipolar life

Are your moods are like an elevator with no control buttons? Mine are.

Ground floor ... I feel normal, content, just quietly getting on with ordinary, everyday life, loving my family and friends. This is as it should be. And maybe there's nothing wrong with me after all. Live.

Going up, top floor. Oh look! There's a shiny thing! I want to sing! Let's go buy stuff! Let's have a big party and invite the world! What could possibly go wrong! Woooooo hoooooooo! Play.

Going up (a different day) top floor. What do you mean you don't agree with me! I'm right! Why don't you think like me? Keep up! How can you be so illogical? I'll f-ing shred you if you don't do what I want! Rage.

Going down, lower ground floor. Flat, listless, can't be bothered. Can still function but it's a drag. Cope

Going down, basement. I'm never getting out of bed again. I'm useless, worthless. Total idiot, how could I ever imagine I could do anything, nothing ever goes right because I'm wrong. I'm a burden to everyone. Hide.

Welcome to my bipolar world. It's always been my world, but it's only recently I've seen it for what it is. About 15 years ago I was diagnosed with clinical depression during one of my 'basement' times. I had a lot of lower ground floor times too, on and off, and I kept out of the basement (so I thought) with alcohol. Until that took me into the blackest ever basement with only one obvious way out. Having survived doing something very dangerous I realised I had to stop drinking or I really would die.

I never took much notice of the playful times or the anger, that was just me, I was fun sometimes, and sometimes I was a devastating bitch. Ha! Deal with it people!

Well, yes, but in time the elevator started going up and down too quickly and, as I became more aware and more knowledgeable about mental health I realised this wasn't good. Doctor. Diagnosis. Bipolar 2. Lithium.

So, I've started this thread in the hope that other bipolar folks will join me, to share experiences and strategies. In my 'beginners' understanding, we are different from other fellow travellers of the back dog. While we experience depression as many others on this site do, the hypomanic or manic ups and, for some the rapid cycling that can happen, are experiences unto themselves.

I want to learn more, and I want to share with others. I hope my fellow elevators will join me here.
BTW, it's a ground floor day in my head today! Yay!

Quirky it's an experience with the room mate. I told my psych I think she's manic. He just laughed. She swears like a trooper and is really loud. She has weekend leave so I'll have the room to myself for 2 days.

I only realised how bad I was when I saw someone behave in a manic way. A friend yiu ere worse than that.what an eye opener !!!

My room mate has been discharged. Yay! I know that sounds awful but I found her totally over the top although she was entertaining. I had a one on one session with a councillor this morning. We spoke about being assertive. I am a passive person and communicator. I often find myself saying yes to things or agreeing to things that I don't either want to do or believe in so we spoke about some strategies that I can use. I'm not sure if I will get another room mate on Monday but I'm happy to have the room to myself over the weekend. I was allowed out today so my partner and I went to the local shopping centre. I brought 2 books and PJs. Am looking forward to getting out tomorrow.

Are you a hospital type place or a private medical facility, just in general terms not specific but only let me know if you want. Just curious int what sort place offers such treatment.

Quirky I'm in a private hospital. I guess you could call it the psych ward. There is a big common area with a lounge room and kitchen. There is also a small outdoor area. It's a small unit. Your psych has to give you permission to have day leave. There are about 5 psychs here. My psych is the director. It's not too bad. There are a few patients from the defence force here.

Lisa, ironic I got a call from my psych hospital notifying me of recommence end of emotional wellness course. They go through their staff.
i found that after my last stay it took a while to bounce back, just doing gardening, the odd walk was tiring. Be kind to yourself in the process baby steps. I hope you found it beneficial, I’m sure you did, sometimes it 2 steps forward 1 back. I can see the positivity in your post and as they say onwards and upwards.

Asdff can relate completely, I’ve been going nuts on Instagram following people on cycling, then being technologically challenged trying to work out emojis, music and so on . Follow heaps of people then delete. On a positive note it’s helping me cycle. I’m trying to get out every day.the roads are damp but will go out. Logging my food and so on. Fingers crossed y wife and I get away soon subject to COVID.
Quirky l hope to find a good autobiography up there, since I’ve left it a bit late .
Velvet hope you are ok

Aries glad you are cycling and helped by technology.

Quirky, helped and hindered. I managed to find Cadel Evans biography at Kmart for $12 , a bargain. I will still take others and ok to reread a book. Do you or others do the same?
