Some starting advice

I’ve been sort of slightly depressed for some time but coping ok but all of a sudden the last month has been severely depressed. Sought help from my GP who has started me on medication and speaking to my employer counsellor once a fortnight. The last couple of days however I’ve been having some strange feelings don’t really know how to describe but it’s like a don’t know who I am anymore. I feel that down I just feeling like crying. I’ve also been very fidgety and what has been a very slight head tremor through my life has just got really bad and noticeable. I don’t speak to my counsellor for another week but want to see advice if people have felt they don’t know themselves. My medication has only started 4 days ago now also.

Hi Tech Succulent,

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with depression, but glad that you saw your GP and are seeing a counsellor. Definitely the right move. While we can't discuss specific medications here on the forum, I have taken medicine for depression for a long time and can tell you that most antidepressants take a relatively long time (weeks) to build up in your system before you might notice any effect. That said, everyone responds to medication differently and it's good that you're being so aware of how it's impacting you. Please don't hesitate to talk to your GP if you are concerned that this is a side-effect.

That awful, restless feeling you're describing is a very familiar one and unfortunately to me just sounds like the depths of a really, really bad depression. I'm so sorry– I wish there was something I could do to make it all go away for you. I know that feeling you're describing of feeling so bad and so odd that you don't even feel like you know yourself, like you're living somebody else's life. It is temporary, but that doesn't make it any easier.

I would encourage you to bring this up with your counsellor at your next meeting, which it sounds like you are planning on doing. In the meantime, if you feel you need some short-term help, or just want to talk, there is always Lifeline and the Beyond Blue helpline. One thing you may find helpful is to do something that makes you feel "grounded," that is keeps your brain busy and focuses the mind. Try getting lost in a book or film (reading aloud may be especially helpful), and do your best to stay well-rested if possible.

We're always here for you on the forums when you need us!

Warmly,

Gems
