- I wanted to try this. I’m seeing a psychologist atm but that’s only every 3 weeks or so. I feel awful a lot of the time and just really want to share that with others because I have to put on a brave face all the time. Only a couple of people know I struggle with depression sometimes and poor emotional regulation, and I don’t want to overload them with how negative I feel all the time. They are really supportive and I do share with them but it’s not fair on them if I’m always negative. Giving this forum a try…

Hey G_S,
Go the individual! I love to be called eccentric and dyed my hair purple once. I was a little embarrassed at first but everyone loved it (that doesn't sound like an individual, but it was very purple). Even my 90 year old neighbour remarked on it. He smiled for ear to ear and I'm sure he did a few dance steps as he remarked, 'You've got purple hair.'
If we could all replace shame with fun, life might be a lot easier but, as your mention, society's expectations are ingrained in all of us to some extent. I remember the trouble I got into at school for being outspoken but it is those who speak up who initiate change. I too admire social rebels and I wanted to be a social reformer from about age fifteen. Have I succeeded? Yes, to some extent because I speak up for what I believe in and I try to live up to my values.
As I get older, I become more excited about my individuality and wish we could all be comfortable to express ourselves without worrying what others think.
Keep writing G_S so we can find out more about the special person I'm sure you are.
Richju xxxx
