I’m not sure if anyone will read this, but I’m feeling a little lost and helpless. I house-share with a 30yr old guy who is lovely and talented and smart. He just so happens to also be deeply depressed. He returned to Melbourne a year ago after living OS with his partner for 3.5 years. The relationship broke down, he lost his job in tech and has come back to nothing. His friends seem to have their own lives and don’t really check in with him or come over to spend time with him. His sister visits from time to time. I’ve tried to encourage him to seek professional help but he can barely fill in an online form. I’ve had the crisis team out a few times when the isolation he’s feeling gets too much. I don’t know what to do to help anymore. Also I personally feel angry at his flakey friends!! Does anyone have any ideas?

Dear iJustDontKn0w~
Welcome here to the Forum, a place if you look around you will find may who have the same problem. You sound a caring person and your house-mate is lucky to have you as a friend.
While you are on the right track trying to persuade him to seek medical help I'm afraid as an adult, particularly one that has been examined by a crisis team, he has to decide for himself. Nobody can make him seek help, just try to encourage him.
You did mention his sister visited, maybe she would have more success. If he has other family members perhaps one of them
You said he was having difficulties filling out forms, perhaps if he was in a face to face situation, such as with a GP it might be easier for him. One can always offer to go with him and wait while he has the consultation, perhaps that might be enough encouragement.
Yes he is in a most discouraging position with the break up of his relationship, losing his job and on returning finding his friends now have other interests and don't relate and want to be with him. In fairness it is very difficult when the peron is depressed to know what to say or do, most would steer away.
There is one tihng you can do, and that is look after yourself, as it is a pretty stressful situation for you. May I ask if you have any support? Family member or friend perhaps?
What do you think?
