Living with depression and diabetes 2

Not sure how to start but here goes... I have been living with depression
For over 20 years. Also in early 1990s was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I never really took it serious until recently when i was put on cholesterol
Tablets for life. It was a shock but also a wake up call. I know I have
To lose weight etc but am finding it hard. My motivation in all things in life
Has been low. How does one get motivated? Am aware of health risks as have
Eye issues too. Any suggestions on getting started? I guess am just lazy but
Need to change but I take the easy way out and avoid issues.

Hi Rusty girl,

I know for me, I don't 'get motivated', I have to just do the thing, go for a walk or a bike ride, thinking about it doesn't really help me. However, if I Just Do It, it brings me some satisfaction later and I am more likely to persist. Start by doing something even if it's real small, one pushup, one squat, at least it was more than you did the day before, next day, do two! I'm a bit lucky, living on the side of a steep hill, just checking the mail is a workout.

It also helps me if I am distracted, taking in some nature, getting a job done, catching up with someone for a walk etc, perhaps it's less about laziness and more about developing healthier habits. It's what we do everyday that makes a difference and that can start with small steps, literally!

Talk any time.

Hi Rusty Girl

I struggle as well with being motivated despite knowing all the things I should do. It is hard to start and I have had people call me lazy but they have know idea how hard it can be. My ex-wife used to say that I was lazy and that my head was in the clouds.

I am about 25kg overweight and like you I am type 2. For me I am getting a Fitbit watch and put one foot in front of the other and track my progress as I increase my level of excersize.

Thank you for your reply. It's great you have a way to get motivated.

I have got a referral to an exercise physiologist as I hope I can get started. I have got 5 sessions available and can only hope this gets me going.

Hi Rusty

I do hope you benefit from that as I am sure you will. It would be great to hear how you are going.

Hi Rusty girl,

Have you joined any of the diabetes support pages on Facebook or looked up support groups in your area?

if that isn’t your thing, do you have a close friend who might like to join you for some regular exercise?

if all else fails, I’m type 1 diabetic so can probably relate to any of the medical stuff if you want to talk about it.

Thanks I will. My job provider has arranged a 1 day motivation course so hope this will get me going.

Trying to get motivated and look for work is not easy but i will hoping for change

Rusty

Hello and thanks for suggestions. My gp suggested i go see an exercise physiologist and podiatrist and got bookings for Wednesday

I guess its a wake up call to get back on track with diabetes. I have got more meds to take so don't want anymore.

I guess you have yours under control? I hope I can do. I know where to get info on type 2 but hope I can get back to regular readings before another test review in July as do not want meds to control it. I already have issues with my eyes. That is being treated for.

I have some wonderful news

I was have type 2 diabetes as well but this is what I did

I bought myself a stationary exercise bike and I make a point of getting on the bike everyday and I started with only 15mins a day and kept going the important thing is to be consistant with the cycling. I have changed my diet completely and I use the meditaranian diet with more fish and vegitables and olive oil. You must be carful of what sugars you eat for example instead of buying choclate eat friut like oranges, apples or even banana's. You must switch white rice and bread for brown rice and bread this has a lower glyceamic index and is a healthier chioce. I know it is a great shift in diet but this is what I did to help me. You must find an exercise program that works for you but the cycling helped me lose 30 kg.

I hope this gives you some guidance on what you can possibly do to reverse your situation

Have a wonderful day and you can always find help at beyond blue
