Hi. Depression and anxiety has ruled my life for over a decade, but I still can't control my emotions enough to live a normal life. I quit my job, I can't make myself do my assessments for my studies. I just can't push through. Everyone thinks I'm lazy but I feel so overwhelmed. Any advice would be great.

Hello Dear SadHumanwithaCat,
A very warm and caring welcome to our forums,
I am so sorry you have been struggling with depression and anxiety for over 10 years, I’m wondering if you’ve reached out for help with your GP or student health officer for some professional help…they can help you understand your depression/anxiety and give you some good coping tools….I tried for a few years to fix* myself, without succeeding, then I spoke to my Dr who set me up with a mental health care plan….and haven’t looked back since….just like a broken bone…depression/anxiety needs professional people to help us…
Depression does that to us…takes away all the joy out of life and also our motivation to do things….I still get overwhelmed and find my emotions hard to control at times, have days where I won’t leave my home….but it’s not everyday now like it used to be…
Distractions is a major coping strategy that I use when I’m overwhelmed…it helps for the moment, but with practise it gets easier to spread that moment a little longer….Do you have things that you like doing, that might help distract your overwhelming thoughts and emotions?…Your forum names suggest to me that you have a cat….animals can be a great distraction for times we feel overwhelmed..I have 3 dogs living with me….or maybe it’s me living with them…they are a great comfort to me…and have helped me many times, when I’m down….
Please talk here anytime you feel up to it….thinking of you with kind and caring thoughts…
Grandy…

Hello SadHumanwithaCat,
Welcome to the forums, it's nice to meet you.
I'm saddened to hear you feel so overwhelmed and have been struggling for over a decade. It sounds absolutely exhausting and it's honestly no wonder you feel like you can't just push through. This is a lot to bear and effort alone often isn't enough.
In my own experience with depression, finding the right support (not just any support) was what really helped. Basically, I was doing everything I could, but I really needed people around me to help prop me up when I felt like I was failing. What I found really damaging was people saying I needed to do x, y, z because it just felt like they were accusing me of being lazy or not doing enough.
I understand you are trying to get some tips, so if you don't mind me asking, are you okay to share with us what kinds of support you have already and if there have been times in the past where you've felt something helped, even temporarily?
James
