I've been feeling very low. I often can't get out of bed or do household jobs. I live alone, and work in quite a public profession. I'm too scared to speak to my friends or family or to ask for help. I'm not really sure what to do.

Hi welcome
Your first step is your GP. Tell him/her as much as you can. Attend any referrals and commence any prescribed medication.
Reconsider your lifestyle, friends if toxic, diet if poor and think of radical changes like getting a pet or growing vegies.
Try spontaneous ideas like camping overnight, flying in a balloon.
All the best

Hello Meggy123, can I offer you a warm welcome to the forums and thank you for posting your comment.
I am so sorry that you are feeling low, but from what you told us it seems as though you need someone to talk to.
I'm not a qualified doctor and can't diagnose you, however, I do accept that any simple activity that can become too difficult to do, trying to get out of bed, even taking a shower or can't get dressed, certainly indicates that you should book an appointment with your GP.
You don't know whether one or two friends might be going through exactly what you are, but perhaps pretending to hide it from everyone and may break down as soon as you mention a word or two.
It's not an easy choice to make and I found myself in the same situation, so I can understand how you feel, but I could talk to my GP and then the psychologist, because one of these had been through this themselves, and the other, had a son who was also suffering from it, so they both knew how terrible it can be.
Living by yourself and working in a quiet profession may also contribute and that does concern us.
Are you able to have a friend go with you to the doctors, they don't have to know why but it will encourage you to seek help.
Maybe if you could do the K-10 test, just copy and paste this in your browser, and if you could it several times, not straight after one another, then take this with you to the appointment.
Ask the doctor about the mental health plan, this entitles you to 10 Medicare paid sessions with a psychologist per year.
Please keep in touch with us and let us know a little more about your circumstances would help us a little more.
Best wishes.
Geoff.
