Do only rich people get quality treatment?

IllGoToTexas
Community Member

I’ve become unemployed, part of the reason my depression worsened, and can no longer afford my psychiatrist, who charges over $150 for 30 minutes. My medication is no longer allowing me to cope so now Im unable to find a new med. He also said I need inpatient treatment which requires an upgrade to my private health insurance or I’ll be out of pocket around $3500.

is psychiatric treatment for the rich in Australia?

Hi Texas

Welcome to the forums and good on you for having the courage to post!

Having depression is dark place to be in. I understand as I have it for a while now.

You dont have to rich at all to get a good quality counselor. Like you I spent a heap of money in my 20's trying to get some peace. Then there was no money left......

I asked my GP if there was anyone I could see for free. Then I saw the best therapist for my anxiety/depression

He was a legend and helped me heal. I had to commit to a weekly therapy visit for 7 months but he was a legend

He also helped me stay on my meds and to understand that I needed frequent counseling to make the best of my current dosage without increasing it. He was a psychiatric nurse and he didnt charge anything

I know several people that have had inpatient treatment without private heath cover

Can I ask if you have a couple or one friend that is there for you as a support person/network at the moment?

This is my 34th year with chronic anxiety followed by depression

You are not on your own Texas. There are many gentle people on the forums that have or have had similar issues

Please post back when its convenient for you. There is no judgement here.....ever

My kind thoughts for you

Paul

Hi Texas,

I understand what you are going through. I have had to spend quite a bit of money initially to get help but later found cheaper options for me. psych treatment can be cost effective as well, I saw my psychologist who usually charges $200 but he reduced the fee significantly for me (<$100) to be able to afford. You can also consider joining support groups or community programs which are usually gold coin donation or free. Have you thought of seeing a counsellor or psychologist? I got off meds a few years ago and found that I could cope with therapy. This is just my experience, everyone’s needs are different. Maybe also have a chat with your GP to see if he/she has any ideas of cheaper options.

hi Texas, can I also welcome you to the site and I'm really sorry that you have become unemployed, which seems to have increased your depression as you say which is certainly not good.

There are counsellors and that includes both psychologists as well as psychiatrists who do bulk bill but you may have to ring around to find one, some actually advertise on their front window saying this.

Ask your present one if they can reduce the price for less time you spend with them or whether they are prepared to bulk bill for a shorter time, some will accommodate while some won't.

If you get another one then the basic notes can be sent between doctors, you just have to sign a form to release the details. Geoff.
