Can I get antidepressants through Telehealth?

Hello everybody,

I am 18 in less than 2 months, and that is the age I am able to go to the doctors without my parents and get medication prescribed to me

I wont get too deep into my mental illnesses, but I'm pretty positive I have depression and some other things wrong with me. Both my parents have depression and both my siblings have it so I think its very likely I have it. We also have family history of Autism, OCD, and anxiety.

But I don't really feel comfortable walking into my GP's office or going to a psychologist/therapist for now. I can't afford therapy and all I really want is antidepressants. I'm certain I need antidepressants because it's affecting my life and my relationship pretty badly. I'm alright with living with depression since I feel i've been depressed since childhood, but I don't want to negatively affect/worry my bf (and my friends become assholes and take it personally when I isolate due to depression, so I dont wanna deal with that drama)

I've gotten acne prescriptions from telehealth services before, and I was just wondering if you could ring up a telehealth service, have a quick appointment, and simply get an antidepressant prescription from a GP? If so, what are good services for this?

Thank you

Dear Leon (Racoon1?)~

I get my antidepressants via telehealth from by regular doctor however they did not start that way. I had to be assessed both medically and psychologically in person first. I was also not able to say what  medication I wanted, that was up to the judgment of the medical professional.

It is only now when this has been going on for a very long time and my doctor is familiar with me that the prescription is over telehealth , and even now I'm undergoing therapy.

I can well understand your reluctance to visit a GP in person, however that is going to be the safest and most effective way. If you are not in a position to pay for a physiologist or other mental health  professional you should discuss this you your GP, who may decide to treat you.

Explaining how you feel and you circumstances can be a hard thing to do, always with the problem of forgetting something important when face ot face, or even leaving out more embarrassing matters. My way around this was to write everything in point form (about half a page perhaps) and hand it over. This suited both the doctor who had a clear list to work from and me as I had a few days to get it all down right.

If you want someone to talk ot text with in the meantime I'd suggest the Kid's Health Line who are very used to these type of problems in young persons and can be very sensible and understanding.

Going ot so much trouble may seem a pain, however as you can see it is better to get it done right and be able to lead a happier life with your B/F and friends

If you would like to let us know how you get on that would be great
