The sports desk

I'm a big sports fan (of the armchair kind) and find that watching sport on tele is a good way to distract myself when I'm down and dwelling on things or if my mind is racing. This time of year it's cricket, with tennis coming up. And Christmas, oh! Boxing Day test, Sydney to Hobart. Love it. Then the Aussie Open around Australia Day. Then the start of the motor racing year, then the footy season (league and rugby for me), the Tour de France, Wimbledon, Formula 1. Sigh.

Any other sports tragics out there? Looking forward to the Oz/ New Zealand test tomorrow!

favorite racecaller? maybe Bert Bryant or Bill Collins "Kingston Town can't win from there" Ken Howard"I'll bet London to a brick on"

jockeys from the sixtees? Ray Setches, Ron Quinton, George Moore, Ron Mallyon.

cricket commentator favourite? Mark Taylor  by a mile. He seems to be the best at  saying the least predictable thing. You learn stuff from him. Ian Chappell , the most predictable. He loves moaning. I miss that radio commentator from the sixtees...what's his name? He made cricket sound so exquisite.

Alan McGilvray, that's him.

Yep, I heard that Kavanagh and O'brien copped suspensions for something like 2 or 3 years respectively.  Peter Moody is still under investigation, but it isnt looking good for him.  Its expected he'll get a ban similar to the others.  I am hoping for Black Caviar's sake that he is cleared, but I think thats highly unlikely.  And if that happens, then there will always be a question mark for BC.  Which is awful, and not deserved.  Yeah I dont think I'd like to be a trainer these days.  Fav current trainer - Chris Waller.  Fav former trainer - Tommy Smith.  Fav jockey in the past 30 years - Darren Beadman.  Fav Race Caller - I dont actually have one.  Fav radio cricket commentator of recent years - Kerry (skull) O'Keefe, for his laugh.  Fav TV cricket commentator - Richie Benaud.  Fav TV cricket commentator still working - probably Michael Slater.  Favourite players in modern era - Dougie Walters (I met him once at a cricket match).  I also met Lennie Pascoe.  I have both their autographs. Do you think it would be worth anything if I was to ebay it?  Mmmm, I think a trend is starting to come through here Scotchie.  Can you see it?  The above are all New South Welshman!  Showing my colours.   ( - :

Most over-rated cricket commentator - Shane Warne (everything is about Shane Warne).  Which is a pity because he does have a good cricket brain, I just wish he'd learn to use it.  Whenever I've heard his commentary he seems to spend all his time promoting himself or defending his old mate Michael Clarke.  Much as I have always been a Michael Clarke fan, I dont think he needs the likes of Shane Warne to help him out.

btw Scotchfinger, did I tell you that I bought a new packet of Arnotts Scotchfinger biscuits yesterday when I did my weekly grocery shop?  And yes, McGilvray is very good too.

I think you are spot on about Warne. He is so biased too. And you're right about him defending Clarke all the time. Apart from his leg-spin bowling, I think he is very over-rated.

Hi Kaz.  Put it to management - happy to act as a consultant.  I can do it from up here.   ( - :

Yes I miss Richie Benaud as well.  This is the 2nd season of cricket now without him.  None of his replacements match up.  And I dont know why they have to employ someone other than an Aussie to lead the team, ie Mark Nicholas.  I dont like him at all.

Scotchfinger - are you watching the BBL Semi tonight?  Your prediction of all forms of cricket selection, Jake Lehman, did just okay tonight, scoring run a ball for I think 14 off 13 or something like that.  I cant agree with you that he will make the Aust team for all forms of the game, but he does show a bit of promise.  Although he missed a real sitter of a catch in one of his matches last week, he did do well with the final ball 6 off 1 ball to win the following match.  I guess as the current coaches son, he has a reasonable chance of being selected in something.  But he isnt a West Aussie!  Nor a New South Welshman for that matter, so who cares!

No doubt you will be more interested in tomorrows match between Scorchers and Stars?  Go Stars...  ( - :

Hey Scotchfinger, did you watch the cricket tonight between Thunder and Strikers?  Now you can see why I said yesterday that Kawahja should be in the recently selected T20 team.  How can they not select him?  He's been the best batsman in the T20 comp all season.  Then they select him as a standby in the ODI team, taking him out of the T20 comp, only to have him sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs without a game.  They never had any intention of playing him, because WA Shaun Marsh was always the next cab off the rank.  Most unfair. Anyway he proved again tonight that he should have been in the ODI team ahead of Marsh, and also in the T20 team instead of him.  Drop the West Aussie (Marsh) and put in the Qlder (Kawahja).  Who is a former New South Welshman by the way.   Sorry Scotchie, I couldnt resist the dig.........

Anyway, goodnight.

Sherie

I agree that Rod Marsh is too old to be selected for the T20s or ODI's. I mean the guy is old enough to be a selector for Scotch's sake! (sorry God's sake I mean)

Some of that stuff was attributed to me in your last post but I think you'll find Neil stated most of that. Glad Thunder won. Only saw the  first half an hour of play. Will be watching Scorchers game. This is a grudge match that we need to win to establish our natural superiority. Hope Agar fires!

For Scotch's sake!  Rod Marsh is too old to even be a selector...................     ( - :

Yes, I will also be watching the game tonight with much interest.  Agar is a talented all-rounder and it would be nice to see him fire tonight.

Have a good day Scotchfinger.  Shine up that BBL trophy nice and bright, coz you could be losing it real soon!
