I'm a big sports fan (of the armchair kind) and find that watching sport on tele is a good way to distract myself when I'm down and dwelling on things or if my mind is racing. This time of year it's cricket, with tennis coming up. And Christmas, oh! Boxing Day test, Sydney to Hobart. Love it. Then the Aussie Open around Australia Day. Then the start of the motor racing year, then the footy season (league and rugby for me), the Tour de France, Wimbledon, Formula 1. Sigh.
Any other sports tragics out there? Looking forward to the Oz/ New Zealand test tomorrow!

Hiya TMB! Glad you like the sports desk mate. Yeah, it's a great time for the cricket. Love it. I like rugby league too, I'm a Raiders fan, and union, Brumbies of course (guess where I live haha).
Boxing eh? My dad was a boxer in his youth (before my time 😊). Back in the day when the Police Boys Clubs operated and taught boxing to keep the young fellas on the 'straight and narrow'. He went on to be a state champion welterweight, and I believe, fought in Jimmy Sharman's tents at some stage. Can't say I like watching boxing, but I quite enjoying doing it at the gym, although I haven't managed to knock out the punching bag yet. Good for getting rid of stress.
Have you checked out the BB cafe? There's a corner there that always has the sports on tele. (It's an imaginary place, so I reckon I can imagine whatever I like on teev.) Pop in sometime if you want and meet the cafe crowd. There's motorcycle parking out the front. What do you ride BTW?
Cheers

Lol! A sumo-sized Scotchfinger. Imagine the size tea cup you'd need for dunking!
(Sorry Joe, couldn't help it, my mind works in funny ways sometimes 😀)

I love almost all sports too. Although unlike a number of you, I dont really like the motor sports. Although I do follow the results of the big Formula 1 races, just dont like to watch them. And I definitely would not go to watch motor racing live, its way too noisy and smells of oil, rubber and fuel. I have gone once! So I do know.
My favourite sports are anything on the Olympics and Commonwealth games (other than sync swimming, I'm sorry to say - something about those nose clips bother me) and World Championships. I think my favourite team sport would have to be cricket. I love all forms of it and follow Australia, NSW, Sydney 6ers (both men and women). I also like NRL (Raiders and NSW Blues), Rugby (Brumbies), AFL (Sydney Swans), Soccer (Sydney FC), Golf, Cycling, Squash, Tennis, Horse racing, boxing, netball, in fact just about everything.
Neil, I'm sure I read somewhere that Freddie Flintoff is in fact now doing a bit of stand up comedy, just like you suggested he should. I personally like him, I think he's funny. But can dominate a little bit perhaps.
I am looking forward to the NZ vs Aus return series of cricket as well. I think the Aussies will have a real battle on their hands, so I hope they dont become too complacent during the current WI vs Aus series.
Hope to see you all at The BB Cafe for the coin toss and anthem prior to the start of play at 10.30am. Hopefully the weather allows enough days play for a result. To the Aussies of course!

The story of your dad is very cool. My twin brother trained to be a boxer but never had a professional fight! Still, he was super fit and very skillful. I bet if you keep trying, you'll knock out that punching bag sooner or later! lol
Thanks a lot for the invite to the BB cafe. May rock up there on my imaginary motorcycle, maybe a different one for each day of the week!

Hi all
Wow, I’ve been away for a couple of days and this thread has exploded – awesome to see.
To Kazzl, yes I watch a bit of tennis, but not a huge fan. I used to watch it heaps more in the days when Agassi was playing.
And though I reside in the same ‘large town’ as you, I don’t follow the Raiders – my team is Cronulla. Maybe one year, maybe one year!
I’m having heaps more success in the AFL where my team is the Hawks.
Apart from that, I don’t have allegiances in any other sports really – though I guess I go for NSW in the State of Origin.
Scotchfinger wrote that he finds the crowd noise is too much over the top of the commentators – and you know, I found that to be the case for the first couple of games last year. I wrote an email to the Big Bash organisation and whether it was because of my complaint about it or whether it was just pure coincidence, but after that, the crowd noise was turned down big time for the future games. Though at times this year when the ground announcer is talking, you can barely hear anything else.
I also love my horse racing – and I think this coming weekend it’s Magic Millions time on the Gold Coast – one year I’d love to get up there for that.
Cheers all and hope the rain soon goes away from the SCG.
Neil
