I have had an ongoing fascination with analysing personality, and what makes myself and others tick, and have found the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to be a surprisingly accurate measure of such things. I have catalogued the types of many of the people in my life, and probably driven them nuts with my project. It's an interesting study, though, observing consistent traits among the types, how they relate to life skills, coping strategies, how they function in different settings and why.
If you know your type, feel free to share, and things you may have discovered about yourself or that have helped you relate to others using resources about it. If you don't know your type, and want to, I found the site 16 Personalities pretty good for testing and dissecting the types.
If it's of any interest, I am an INTP, and the information about my type on that site is pretty spot-on. I've only used that as a starting point for my research. There is so much information out there on the types, and the differences between them that actually goes a long way to breaking down the core of otherwise confusing conflicts, or getting the most out of a person at work or in a friendship, etc.
Anyway, it's a bit of a project of mine, and I wanted to open it up to anyone who wants to contribute.

I somewhat consistently get INFP and INFJ.
But in the past few years that I've done it (somehow they keep making me do it at different training courses), I also switch between I/E, and my scores are pretty, er, centrist.

James, if I can make a suggestion, perhaps Google INFP vs INFJ. The first thing that comes up is an article from Personality Hacker, which I've found to be a pretty good site. The article goes through some key differences in the behaviours and motivations of the two types. I used the same site to get a better feel for the difference between INTP and INTJ personalities, as some tests have pegged me as an INTJ. Though I do have some leanings toward INTJ behaviours my motivations are fairly solidly in the INTP camp (my other half however is very much an INTJ, so the information came in handy there, too). Have a look through that and see if it clears up for you which type you may be. If none of that rings true, do the same for ENFP and ENFJ and see how you go. One doesn't typically flip from an introvert to an extrovert, though. It's possible you are an INFJ, I have known just a couple, but both have not realised until later in life they are introverts because they do have that interest and care for people. The key difference there is where you get your energy. Do you need a time out on your own to recharge when you are exhausted, or do you desire the company of others, then? If the former, you're an introvert, if the latter, an extrovert. Hope that helps.
Blue.

Hey Blue,
Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look in the morning when my head's not spinning so much.
Without hijacking the thread, I think the reason why I flip and land in the middle so much is because I don't even know how to answer the questions! Part of the reason why I'm on the forums is because of a bit of an identity problem I'm having which means I get confused too, haha.
To answer your last question: both, neither, one or the other. Ask me again tomorrow and it'll be a different answer 😉 Or pretend to be someone else, and I'll give you a different answer straight away.
But for simplicity, I did the test today: INFJ!

Haha yes. Standard train of thought:
"You rarely do something just out of sheer curiosity."
No, completely untrue...Actually, I'm not that impulsive am I? Somewhat true...You know what? I always reason it out to myself before. Completely true...But I'm only reasoning it because I don't want to be curious...Okay, middle.
Yeah, I don't think people like us were meant to do these tests 🙂

Must admit James, from what I know of you so far, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you are indeed an INFJ. I've noticed your comments on a few threads I regularly visit, and you are positive and thoughtful and insightful, which fits the profile. Did you read the write-up on the type? If you did, did it seem accurate to you? I'm quite curious.
Your last post here reminds me of an old joke... "I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure". 🙂
