Dear All~
The real Alistair Cooke was the compere of of Masterpiece Theater for over 20 years, however I best remember him for his weekly commentary on the USA, Letter from America, whjich I enjoyed on the BBC/ABC from the 80's until his death in 2004. It gave a unique perspective on the American way of life. Apparently he had been delivering this since WWII.

Oh, I certainly do!
Midsomer Murders is quite odd, in that while a LOT of the murders are quite grusome, the way they are presented and the general mood is just so pantomime that they don't have the effect they would in a no-nonsense crime show. Certainly a fave, as well as Death in Paradise!

Dear Doberman38 and All~
Midsomer Murders is more than odd with some 400 murders in the one patch during the series, and that's not counting attempts. I guess pantomime sums it up, and I agree it is so over the top one simply cannot take things seriously, it's attraction I guess
Quite different from Shetland, or even Van der Valk. Actually I tend to avoid them, a tad too lifelike.

Dear Quirky and All~
Actually watching the actors trying to keep a straight face and failing miserable time after time can be as much fun as watching the actual performance.
I remeber watching an out-take of Sir Bernard Woolley trying to deliver one of his famous conjugations
Oh, that's another of those irregular verbs, isn't it?
I give confidential press briefings;
you leak;
he's been charged under Section 2a of the Official Secrets Act
I think Nigel Hawthorne was making faces off camera, Derek never did get it right and had to go have a soothing rest for a bit.

Since you got those penguins breeding so well on DB's thread, I thought I'd gather up a bundle & bring them back here! They are simply loving the place!
