Hi everyone. I'm Geoff and have been a dedicated Volunteer on the forums for 13 years. I am proud to have stopped some of the stigmas that are associated with mental health as well as doing my best to help others too

Before my health went south I was a builder in all aspects of home construction and renovation. If you don't have a handyman around I hope I can offer you some tips that may be of help. I have had many years of experience in home renovation and will do my best to help you out if you are stuck and need some advice

I hope my experience may be of help to the people on Beyond Blue and make their life a little bit better. Even if you need help with the most basic painting job or putting up a shelf I can help there too with some tips

I will do my best to get back to anyone that has a question when I can as this is social yet important thread

Hello Sleepy, and a wave to Hanna as well as everyone else, you know the feeling that you've been here once before, I certainly do, as this is the second time I've reached this post count.

The heater should have provided four roller wheels but if you want to sell it try Gumtree or your local supermarket may have a board where you can advertise the heater free of charge.

ello Sleepy, I must admit that the N**** heater is a better heat than the split system, it makes no noise, cost, well 6 of one, half a dozen of another, we still have to pay.

The split system cooling, I couldn't do without it's excellent.

Hi Geoff! Have you had lots of posts here before? Thank you so muh for being on the forums

Those N*** heaters are calling my name. They are selling them cheaply at a major chain store, but saying that they have some cosmetic defects. Still not that cheap. Do you think that would make any difference?

I think i've heard also that they are better without the timers, which can play up.

It is important for mental health to stay somewhat warm in these winters... cold = a bit depressing!

Hello Sleepy, if I can say that the N***** in my loungeroom I use I've fallen onto many times, as it's on castors, but you can get brackets to mount them on the wall, however, I do use the split system to warm the room up first of all.

It's probably just me but I prefer the N**** for heating and the split system definitely for cooling, in the end, we still have to pay and as money is taken out of my DSP pension every fortnight, the quarterly bill is not enormous.

In regard to the timers, mine doesn't have one.

I absolutely agree 'it is important for mental health to stay somewhat warm in these winters... cold = a bit depressing!'

Hey geoff and sleepy. l love heater talk, seems to be a curse of mine/ l've moved a lot over the yrs but never score good heaters. lf it was a rental we never knew what to buy because we probly won't need it at the next place. Eventually my ex got what's suppose to be the most economical panel heater, crazy dear 400 l think. That house was a big open plan lounge , no carpet , it heated that pretty good. At this house l used it one yr but the bills went up 300 a quarter so she costs a bit. This house had a gas heater , off the bottle not the mains , that was a ripper but a bottle , 120, only lasted 3 wks. I sold that heater 400 and put in a wood heater bought of my brother for a 100 , score .l know no good for sleepys sitch but just sayin.

so, l'm using that 2 yrs now . As you know they heat great but, you work like a dog, even my brother complains yet he loves chainsaws but it never ends , l hate chain saws and my daughter found really cheap wood , but still we're on our 4th heaped trailer load still got mths to go. And you handle every single log, 4 or 5 times.load trailer, unload, stack it, carry to house porch, carry inside, load fire, light fire, keep fire going all night , tell ya what , a button is lookin pretty damn good. Think my next house l'll just have one for nice cold wkends in , and something else with a button for the rest of the time.

So l feel for ya sleepy been there , hope it's working for ya now and your nice and cosy and it's not too dear. l'm thinking l've still got the panel heater ,bringing that out again for when l can't be bothered with wood and fires and living with the bill. Tell ya what when you have a physical job, and a big property, and renovating , a button is very tempting these days.

It's like a whole topic isn't it, heaters and their effectiveness. I dont' think i can tire of it either, moving a lot! I learn a lot!!!
When I went in the store they were showing me two different oil heaters, same brand and type, one kinda small and the other huge and chunky. (different number of fins/bars). They told me more surface space = more warmth.

It makes sense, but this didn't seem to be the case?

Someone donated to me a small one with like 6 fins, and their one of like 12 fins - honestly,, I prefer the smaller one. It seems to heat the sweet spot!!

Lol so it is just trial and error. I can understand that does sound liek tonnes of work and effort for the wood, seems like every one has a catch. It does sound beautiful though and I wander if it feels so special to make your own heat? Something like the olden days. Lol yes I do just push a button, but I'm always wandering if the heater will actually be effective

I'm wanting a N**** one just for comparison. Thanks Geoff for advising you also don't have the timer. Just heard they are unreliable!!

Hello RX and Sleepy, we have to stay warm, walking into a cold room only breeds discontent.

When we sold the property, the best thing was not having to chop wood, although it's a great heat, it is hard work and pushing a button is easier, however, it seems to hit you in the head with the warmth, whereas wood heaters heats the whole body.

Nothing is cheap, except for summer and cooling doesn't cost as much.

I prefer the Noriot (N****), but everybody is different.

Maybe the more fins mean it has a better chance of heating a larger area, same as a fan on a heater won't produce enough heat for a much larger area.

Closing off rooms you don't use helps, and I'd much prefer a wood heater, only if someone could cut the wood for me, that never happened.

It really does sound like a lot of work to get the heat going, and if you're the one who falls on doing it, I can imagine it becomes laborious to have a wood heater. I guess people do like the warmth and concept, but the work must be hard in Winter.
I wander why I found the smaller fin heater just as effective as the big one. Not sure why. It is really very compact (and quite old) but seems to do the trick.
Hopefully I can get the N*** heater at some point, and we can all keep warm

Yeah it's funny isn't it sleepy , heating's interesting when you've moved around and froze 1/2 the time. Hate that but it's so tricky getting a win isn't it and 3/4 of them are crap and don't do like they claim. l think maybe geoff has a big point with the costs , l really should stop moaning and just except the trade off and the bigger bills for cosy . But bloody hell those bills can be no joke when they hit you at bad times. And trying to choose the right heater is like a gamble with the price of them isn't it.

l was wondering if you were using those fin ones. l heard back when they were good too and at the time most economical , not sure about now. l know too yeah the big ones don't wheel good either do they , we had one in one place. Just can't remember how it heated but l remember trying to wheel the thing like you . So that'd be great then if the little ones warmer, so much easier . must be cheaper to run too. Might be what l need instead , l only ran the panel one on 1/2 or it would've costed 7 or 800 , too much. So l don't reckon they're as cheap as they claim.

hi rx... the cost is a big thing isn't it and also with the moving.
This thing is SOOOO heavy lol and also i'm worried about it scratching the floorboards with wheeling it.
THe small one is cute and less of a monster.
I guess that is someting to factor in. Glad at least you're saving on the bill with the wood, i'm not sure either if these oil ones are as cheap as they claim and also if the bigger one necessarily is the best, maybe for an average size room it is overkill, not sure
