Hi everyone. I'm Geoff and have been a dedicated Volunteer on the forums for 13 years. I am proud to have stopped some of the stigmas that are associated with mental health as well as doing my best to help others too

Before my health went south I was a builder in all aspects of home construction and renovation. If you don't have a handyman around I hope I can offer you some tips that may be of help. I have had many years of experience in home renovation and will do my best to help you out if you are stuck and need some advice

I hope my experience may be of help to the people on Beyond Blue and make their life a little bit better. Even if you need help with the most basic painting job or putting up a shelf I can help there too with some tips

I will do my best to get back to anyone that has a question when I can as this is social yet important thread

Good Eve/Early Good Morning Geoff.

Thanks so much for your reply about garage roller door. Am in touch bases with you that I hadn't forgotten about your advice. The garage roller door that needs to be opened without electricity is from the outside.. Great advice about threading a coat hanger..... Unfortunately I'm unable to reach it due to current health issues, so would you please recommend me the next way to go about it... what type of locksmith do I need?

Thanks.

Hi geoff

I have a possum not large rats in my downstairs roof. I have a man hole upstairs, i have no idea how to access downstairs. I need to go in roof to see if i can find any sort of sign where its coming in from. I think my ladder is tall enough. I cant check on roof because i dont have extension ladder nor can afford to buy one. Is there any safety precautions for going in a roof. Im scared ill fall through. I'll buy a mask from the chemist to wear. I live in public housing and although ive done my place up beautifuly and used inheritence for new carpet ect i cant fix the fact the place is built dodgily. The walls along my stairs are so thin and bend. They are seperated from the skirting board thing. I used no more gaps which was good until i bumped the wall and it all seperated again. Any idea on how to strengthen it cheapily that i could do myself. Ps i dont own a drill just a🔨

Hi Amiella, that's OK, sometimes we become preoccupied with other situations.

You could contact a roller door manufacturer or an installer who will ever help you or direct you onto some locksmith, however, if you are a bit handy yourself there is another option if you have a drill, either corded or cordless, but it will mean you will need to put a new lock in but if this sounds to be an awful job, then ring any locksmith, it will only take them a few seconds to unlock it.

Try and hide a spare key in an inconspicuous place, maybe tie a piece of string to it, but please let us know how you get on.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Hello Amiella, I'm sorry for how you are feeling and will look out for any other comments you have made on other threads, please take care and look after yourself, I know it's easier said than done.

Hi Helium, if you do have a possum I know how annoying this can be and any possible stains they leave which could seep through and stain the ceiling.

Can I ask whether you have a two storey house and if there are any trees where a possum could quite easily jump from.

Please don't attempt to get onto your roof if the ladder doesn't extend well above it, it's easy to climb onto it if the ladder is shorter but it's very difficult to go back down it.

If you get into the roof cavity you can only knee on the roof joists which are 450mm apart, and downstairs could be under the house, so can you tell whether the house is brick or weatherboard.

In the roof cavity, you may have insulation, which looks lovely and soft, but it makes you itch, so wear so clothes that cover your body and gloves if possible, and if you start to scratch yourself once you're out of the roof', have a shower and wash your clothes but you may not have to do this if you don't touch the insulation.

If the walls appear to be thin it maybe because the plaster back in the early days has fibre going through it and once it's dented, bumped into they do tend to bend, compared to the plaster these days which doesn't and the only way to strengthen these walls is to either cover them up by some sort of wood lining, such as pine, which is nailed on the outside of this plaster and becomes very decorative or too replace the wall with new plaster all which cost money.

Please get back to me and if you can let me know about the trees around your house.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Thanks geoff.

The problem is on my side is a row of 5 joined townhouses. Im the only tidy clean one. I have no trees overhanging but my neighbours do and there not talkable to. You cant have nice things and neighbours as the saying goes. Im the one that books there cleanups cause they just put rubbish on the street and leave it. I will go sweep 2day out front the mess from a neighbour who spilled all there cat litter and cat poo in driveway and will not clean it up. Its 2 story. I definately wont try get outside on top of roof. My house is brick somewalls and plaster board others. Where the possusm is concentrating is around the downstairs area around the stairs which is plasterboard. Ill put jeans on up there and long sleeve and gloves, i didnt think about the insulation. I dont know if there is any. Im not going up 2day. I had just under 3 hrs sleep im very overtired and only had a concussion a few days ago so am still pretty wobbly vertigo feeling. Thankyou so much for your help this thread is fantastic. I can guantantee ill be back with more questions about something or another. One thing i miss doing is i used to love using a jigsaw and making things sanding and painting them. But since moving here im worried about all the noise of doing it with all the neighbours so close. Cheers Lynne

Hi Lynne, that's nice to keep the area clean, that's the worst part living with 4 other townhouses, you can never be sure how the others will behave and once you start cleaning up they expect you to continue doing it.

All new buildings must put insulation in by regulation.

What would love to make from your jigsaw and they don't really make a loud noise and you are entitled to use it during the day and you sound to be a lovely lady.

If the trees overhang the other townhouses this could be the reason why the possums are getting in.

I'm worried about your concussion and are you still seeing your doctor.

Best wishes.

Hi geoff.

Thankyou for your concern but im alright. Ive explained a bit about it it my tbi head trauma post. My buildings realy old. I would love to make digging dogs again. Im getting another centrelink loan and in sept and im gonna do it 👍 I've gotta buy from scratch again so i need knew jigsaw and table and wood. I have a sander. Ill buy marine ply this time. The last time i bought exterior ply and that stuff i cant remember the name you put on the edges but it didnt last long in the weather. One thing ive noticed with paint is craft paint lasts just as long as exterior paint on ornaments in the rain and sun. Driveways clean up to the rd. I will book a cleanup for there mattresses which have sat on the street for nearly 2 months.

Cheers lynne

Hi Lynne, that's so great for you to clean up the area around or in front of the townhouses but is it going to cost you any money because that's not fair on you to be out of pocket.

What you put on the edges could be wood veneer which you have to heat for it to stick on, and you're right it won't last outside at all.

Can you buy some plastic channelling or an 'L' plate which you can glue on?

Thanks Lynne.

Best wishes.

Geoff.
