Hi all, this thread is a running commentary for all members on things for improvements to the forums. This can be anything from how it looks, the categories, to moderation, community rules etc.

While we might not be able to implement everything straightaway, or keep everyone happy all of the time, we'd like to hear about what you think we can do better.

This is not a thread for discussing the moderation or editing of individual posts - if you have questions about this please contact the team offline via email modsupport@beyondblue.org.au

To avoid repeating suggestions already received, below are some results from our last user survey giving an indication of which new features people would like to see on the forums. This survey was answered by 1,597 users:

G’day tranzcrybe,
I read your reply to Sophie_M and am respectfully hoping to continue feeling included by responding to your awesome post. I may have responded in private to tranzcrybe if that were an option.

I believe all respectful communication is worthwhile.

Is not liking a post worthwhile? Is liking a post worthwhile? They’re both communicative also, both aren’t swearing or abusive so that implies worthwhile communication, or at least in the realm of respectful communication dependent upon their context.

If one liked an abusive post that might be considered abusive, but abusive posts won’t pass bb moderation, nor should they. So we can consider that option dismissed.

If one choose to “not like” a post, is that an expression of disagreement? I don’t think so, absence of a response doesn’t imply disagreement thus a person who sees no likes to their post as evidence of the communities disagreement may be over reacting if they become excessively traumatised. No comment implies nothing is the legality.

It wasn’t the straw on the camels back that broke the back, instead all the weights before the final straw.

We could address the issue of identification by providing more options. Eg, ability to change ones avatar name, ability to post anonymously despite having an avatar name, ability to become part of a group name, i.e. where every member of the group posts as ANON. Modsupport is the title of group name used by bb modsupport in emails, the group name protects each member with anonymity.

Another option is to have a sub-forum, where all posts are anonymous, yet still moderated.

Another anonymous option might be the like button extended to the thanks/laugh/like options… what if all the button options for responding to a post were anonymous?

Status is certainly an interesting notion on forums. I note several status symbols on bb, thus bb openly supports status as in accord with bb rules/policy.

Identity can certainly influence reception. Racism is one anti-social example. A hierarchy of competence is a prosocial example of how identifying one’s position in said hierarchy will influence reception.

I think the character limit would be better if raised also, a few times now I have had posts that are rejected as they are deemed too long, and I cannot seem to split them into multiple posts either, these also seem to not go through.

I tend to write from my mind to the page with free flowing thought, so to redo, redraft, or edit the post after rejection, is something I don't do, as the emotion, the thought, and the reality of the words of that time I posted have come and gone.

It makes it difficult to respond to someone, when you pour so much into a post only for it not to be accepted, then not having the energy, or the words to tell the person you were trying to respond to that you did actually write something meaningful, but it just went into the past.

I think it probably makes some people think they are being ignored or something.

Perhaps there could be an indicator that someone is typing in a thread, so others can see someone is attempting to respond. Either a *User1 is typing something, or *User 1 is responding to User2 etc

That way people could see that at least an attempt was made to respond.

Or even some sort of indicator that the thread is active right now or the like.

"No-reply" messages would be improved if they included a quotation of the post in question.

Currently I receive the "no reply" and have no idea which post it refers to so am unable to re-examine it.

I am confused as I thought as we all use a madeup name then we are all anonymous.

I understand the need being anonymous which is why we are not supposed to say where we live or any identifying factors.

As I feel the forums are already anonymous, I am not sure why we need another anoymous forum within the larger one.

I am sorry if I am slow and have misunderstood.

I find these discussions very informative and am glad we all have this thread to express our views.

thanks everyone for expressing your opinions here .

Hey quirkywords.

The anonymity of all forums is false. One's internet service provider can read every word written, every webpage visited etc - they have to to be able to provide the internet service.

Secondly, any website we visit will receive our IP address, for every website needs that IP address to be able to know where our data comes from, and to know where to send data to.

So in reality I could purchase a software program that can show me the IP address of any poster, and from there work out their physical location - to some degree of accuracy, like street level, sometimes building level.

I presume you have not read the MASSIVE documentation bb provides behind the tiny little checkbox we tick upon registering... all my above points are in it, buried deep, hidden away from members.

hi davidn goliath, sorry if i'm not correct, but is it really that easy to identify someone by their IP address? i thought only govt bodies or police could do that to solve crimes.

Hey David

I havent read the T&C's especially when I started in 2016 as I was in a bad place with my depression

Thankyou for letting me know as I am a member like yourself....Are there really business names mentioned in the T&C's??...I didnt know that David...Thankyou for your input

Paul

G'day blondguy. Yes. Kind regards, dng.

Evening blondguy,

I suggest you have a read of my anti-movement thread in depression section.

On page 2 I began just by coming to an estimation of the size of the documents behind the checkbox.

Kind Regards, David'n'goliath.

Thankyou for the heads up and will do David

Please call me Paul if you want

My best
