Struggling to go to work

Jayelle
Community Member

I have suffered with anxiety for a number of years, but seems to be getting worse. I am ESPECIALLY struggling to go to work. I am filled with dread at the thought of it. (Have been at my job 15years) I have had so much time off; unsure how long they will tolerate this behaviour. And then what? My husband is the opposite of me; very outgoing/ chatty etc. anyone else have stress about going to work?

Hello Jayelle,

Thank you so much for reaching out and connecting with our community.

Your situation sounds especially tricky! It is very common to experience resistance to anything that makes us feel afraid, heavy, or beyond our current capacity. Once our brains have associated a certain place or event as any of those things, we can quickly experience stress, even at the thought of it. So, this is a good opportunity to be extra kind to yourself and know that your mind is just trying to protect you.

It might be helpful to become curious about what exactly is making you feel so much dread surrounding work. What thoughts or feelings come to mind and are there any patterns? What would you change if you could?

It could also be helpful to note the things in your life that bring you a sense of grounding. What are you doing in those moments? Do your thoughts and feelings change? How do you feel about work when you're experiencing more calm?

We would love to hear you answers! You can also note them down in a journal for your own reflective practice. We hope that our wonderful community members will also impart some of their advice soon as well.

You can always reach out to our support service directly to get some help with this in the interim. 🙂
