Stressed at work

I started anew job about 12 months ago, within 6 months I was promoted to manager, now I don’t have any managing experience to offer but I got the job. This job has proven to be hard and leaves me in tears and quite upset at least several times a week. I am also a part time carer for my husband who had a progressive disease. I can get quit irritable at times, stopped going to the gym and feeling worthless. I am scared of quitting my job as I have loyalty issues and feel like I am letting others down. I need som help and guidance please. I’m in tears just thinking about this.

Hey Kaz769,

Welcome to our wonderful forums. We are so glad you have joined us here tonight and have taken the brave step in reaching out and sharing what you are going through. We can hear that your role as a manager has been taking a toll on your mental health and we are so sorry it has been so difficult for you. You are in a safe, non-judgmental space and we hope you will find the support you need to help you through this difficult time.

To be promoted to a managerial position within 6 months of starting a new job shows your competency and at the same it is a big leap so we can totally understand your feelings around this. A situation like this can feel especially worse if we are feeling alone and feel like everything is hinging on us. That's a lot of pressure. Please know that you don't have to feel alone here and there is support available. We encourage you to contact our Support Service anytime at 1300 22 4636 or via web chat (3pm - 12 am AEST)  at www.beyondblue.org.au/getsupport. A friendly and caring counselor can support you and point you in the right direction for help in your area.

You can also check out some information and resources on our Heads Up website which is dedicated to promoting healthy workplaces: Heads Up: Workplace Stress

Please keep posting here and let us know how you are doing, whenever you feel up to it.

Hi Kaz769

You seem quite dedicated to all areas of your life, and your fear and frustration at the thought of letting people down is very understandable. In addition to Sophie_M's suggestions, some small but effective things you could do is seek advocacy/support from your work- perhaps a confidential organisation counsellor? You can also use thread to brainstorm some mindfulness activities to help lift your mood too- we are here to listen and discuss things further if you like too 🙂
