I am dealing with depression, anxiety and loneliness. I am working on connecting with other people and just visited a neighbour and had a nice chat and felt quite good, but I came home and began to feel lonely again. I’m curious to know if anyone has had this happen to them or felt this way and maybe some tips to overcome this?

Hey Rusty,

You're right, building connections with people takes a long time whilst building trust and friendship. I hear you, sometimes feeling anxious sucks the life out of the things you usually enjoy. For a suggestion, perhaps you can ask yourself what might be the root of that anxiety? I think feeling anxious or sometimes even flat is the body's way of trying to regulate itself after adrenaline. Try to go easy on yourself. Continue getting out and into nature, and I hope you build some connections with others soon.

Kind regards,

Well it’s been a little while since I’ve posted something. After going to a great festival I’ve come back feeling less anxious and feeling better about life. I still have moments of loneliness but hopefully I’ll be able to concentrate on making connections and making new friends.

Hi Rusty

I did post on your old thread, wondering how you were doing. Nothing has changed on my end, yours sounds like it's a bit better. Hope it continues to improve. Around here, it's a bit of a nightmare with the Great Western Hwy close for goodness knows how many months, with no one having brains to realise a 200 year old convict causeway couldn't last forever! Makes me wonder about the human race, period! Hope you keep happy and busy.

Hi Alikiwi

Thanks for your replies, thankfully things are heading in the right direction for me just keep to connect with people but I know I just have to keep at it.

Sounds like it’s tough with what sounds like a major road being closed. I gather it makes life a bit harder when you want to travel to get out and about. I hope things improve for you as I know how hard life can be.

All the best

Hello Rusty, Alikiwi,

Its good to hear that things are heading in the right direction…I’ve been living in my town now for around 10 years and have only made one really good friend, being a very small town where everyone knows each other…the resident’s friends group and progress society do not let newbies in….one day it will all fizzle out completely as they are all elderly….

Alikiwi, the closure of that highway has made it near impossible for me to visit my children…the detour makes the trip so much longer around 2 hours extra on an already 6-7 journey…makes it a full days drive……I have heard it could take up to 4-5 years to repair/replace….

Feeling disappointed in our government..

Grandy..

Hi Ggrand,

The detour should only add half an hour to the trip, unless there is an accident (so far three) which being mostly single lane blocks the road completely. Should only take a few months at most to repair, but it then needs to be bypassed completely at least with four lanes to go around/over it. Meanwhile Lithgow's small roads are getting utterly hammered!

I am just wondering if anyone gets frustrated and tired of the endless effort of dealing with anxiety, depression and loneliness and even though I’m putting in a great effort I just don’t feel like I’m achieving anything.
I know I’m doing the right things but I can’t help but think it’s just not worth the effort. What do people do to push through.

Hi Rusty,

I admit the only thing I have in common, more or less, is the loneliness, and even that gets frustrating especially at this moment. I too am wondering what the point of it all is and unfortunately I don't have an answer. This also leads to boredom which I suspect you might find as well. What to do to push through? Eat a bit too much seems to be true, for me at least, but fortnightly bush walks help with that and the boredom.

Mind you, I do wonder what the point of doing anything is, if you do it alone. Walking the beach (not an easy option for me) does seem pointless on you own, so one may as well stay at home, more boredom! Logically it is all worth the effort, but logic and emotions are rather opposites, so we seem to go in a circle. Maybe just going in circles is enough, and just maybe something good will eventually turn up if we keep trying. On some level, I'm sure I'm a very trying person, at least some people may think so 😉

Hi Alikiwi

Thanks for your reply, it does feel like I’m going around in circles. I think I am a trying person, although when I feel like I’m going around in circles it doesn’t feel like anything good will happen. I end up thinking how long I can keep trying before I end up giving up

Hi Rusty,

It can be incredibly frustrating to put so much work into something and see no clear, observable results. It sounds like you might be experiencing burnout—you are exhausted because you’ve been fighting so hard for such a long time. That tells me you are a truly tenacious and strong person.

Have you tried being kind to yourself and acknowledging that it is okay to feel this way? Try reminding yourself: 'It is totally okay to be frustrated because I am doing my absolute best to become the person I want to be. This process matters.'

I used to train for different sports, and I often felt so disappointed when I didn't win. Looking back, I’m proud that I tried, even when I failed. Those experiences taught me how to cope, how to accept my limits, and how to be kind to myself. I didn't realize it at the time, but that process was building my character. Resilience isn't something we’re born with; it’s a skill we learn through the effort of trying (and sometimes failing) and by nurturing our vulnerable selves.

You are on the right path, and your breakthrough might be just around the corner. I am cheering you on—you are not alone, and I hope you keep posting.
