Returning to school as a teacher

Im anxious about returning to school as a teacher of young students. How do I protect my self and fellow staff from the anxiety due to changes to social norms. No high fives, avoiding people in the corridor, feeling like every one may be a threat to myself of students?

Hi LisaGood,

I’m so glad you have reached out here. I’m not a teacher, but I can imagine returning to the classroom is a very nerve racking and stressful event. I know that the way we engage with other people will be vastly different to what we’re used to...

I wonder if maybe trying to reframe social distancing from the mindset that it is an act of love and protection for people that we care about, rather than thinking of it in terms of threats, might help a little?

Perhaps maybe think of it as an opportunity to get creative about how you can connect with your colleagues and students e.g. friendly waves instead of high fives, etc. I know it’s not the same, and of course it’s all very strange and stressful, but I think maybe now is about trying to adapt to a new way of doing things?

My thoughts are with you...I imagine it’s a very stressful time for a lot of teachers. You’re doing a very important job 🙂

Kindness and care,

Pepper
