Physical symptoms of anxiety

I have had a sore dry throat since before Christmas and my gp thinks I have had a virus and have globus due to my anxiety. i have now started on medication and am seeing a psychologist but these physical symptoms of anxiety are getting the best of me.

i have sore tight dry throat ear pain loss of appetite early satiety unintentional weight loss (3kg in 10 days) and some diarrhoea. All of my googling tells me i need to see a dr yet he seems unconcerned. I wonder how many of my symptoms are related to the virus/anxiety/. My dr told me to go back and see him in a month but it has only been 10 days and I think I need to go back.

this anxiety is exhausting

Hi Island11,

I cant relate to your post enough.

IMO it all has to do with anxiety. I went to a doctor (my normal gp was away) after I had a breakdown and he put it down to a virus, but I've noticed my symptoms change depend on how anxious I am.

When I get super anxious my physical symptoms are dry mouth, my stomach churns bad and I get mild diarrhoea. I also loose my appetite. When I'm not feeling that anxious I have a slight stomach growl and only very slight runny stools (sorry tmi haha) but I can eat something small.

anxiety is very exhausting - but try focus on ways to reduce your anxiety levels (talk it out!, meditation, walks, something that brings you joy etc) and you may notice your physical symptoms get weaker.

This is just a blip! you'll get through this 🙂

Thanks for your reply

i feel as though the symptoms of my anxiety and the side effects of my medication are making my anxiety worse. It’s like a cycle I can’t escape from. If my throat was better I feel as though my anxiety would drastically reduce. My gp seems reluctant to send me to an ENT or gastroenterologist and I feel as though I won’t resolve this until I see a test that proves I don’t have throat cancer.

Hello Island11

You are proactive with your health by posting your thread...and thankyou!

I have had Globus on and off for a long time...I am not a doctor...I used to have chronic anxiety for a long while and my symptoms were the same as yours due to anxiety and acid reflux...and yes it is awful to have. I also take meds....low dose SSRI

I know Google can be a huge benefit with some physical problems that we go through yet using Dr Google for mental health can sometimes make us feel worse as there are so many conflicting and incorrect info on line

Annabay wrote an excellent thread about physical feelings of anxiety...I have the 'copy & paste' link below 🙂 There are heaps of new members posting about their physical symptoms....

Hi

i also have dry throat and Globus and gut issues.

I’ve been diagnosed with chronic anxiety, chronic stress and panic disorder after thinking I was having an allergic reaction to something. My throat felt like it was closing up but all tests came back normal.
there are days when it’s really bad and days where it’s not too noticeable.
I’ve recently been put on reflux meds, mild soft muscle relaxants (to help with the Globus) and antidepressants, they seem to be working but then again I have good days and bad days.

hope that your symptoms ease. Sending you positive vibes.
