My Muscles keep having spasms and I Constanty have this gut feeling something is not right it has now been put down to anxiety but My question is how do u identify between your anxiety and when you have hurt yourself causing you to stress which then sets off symptoms. I know physio helps but i can't seem to relax as i think i'm worried it will hurt

Hi Jessten,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for being here.

This is a really great question, and I don't think it's something that anybody can really answer. This is kind of the trick with anxiety; it makes us think that perhaps it could be something more. After all, anxiety and panic attacks are our bodies way of sounding the alarm bells! So what you're feeling is really common here.

Muscle spasms are also really common; they can go solo (unrelated to anxiety) combine with (anxiety as well as another cause) or be only related to anxiety. Muscle spasms are a tricky one because it's not something that you can easily link with as opposed to sweating or shaking.

How long have you been having these muscle spasms? Do you know when they started? You said in your post you're worried it will hurt; do you mean that relaxing your muscles makes them spasm more?

As a guideline though, when something could be anxiety - we work with that. With muscle spasms that can look like things like progressive muscle relaxation or body scans. Although the key here is to give yourself permission to relax.

Hope this helps

Hi

Thank you that does help. I'm unsure when they started as I only noticed it after a Fall yrs ago but after nothing was found it has been put down to anxiety as when I'm having physio I'm told to relax as I'm fighting them yet I feel that I am relaxed which is frustrating as I don't realise Im doing it.
