Overcoming physical symptoms of social anxiety

Sometimes when i interact with others my head will literally shiver and if i talk in a formal environment my whole body starts to shiver.

But in my mind, i dont feel nervous or anxious. It's just that in the moment my body starts to behave abnormally and most of the time i can't control it.

so what are some strategies to overcome this?

Hello danver_1,

It is interesting if not annoying when our body does one thing but our mind thinks another.I used to do a lot of public speaking and my hands would shake but I was not feeling nervous.

I used to do deep breathing and shaking and tensing my arms legs , all body parts then relaxing before I had to talk in public.

Sometimes going for a brisk walk helped me.

Not sure if any of these suggestion will help you.

Sometimes I accepted I would shake and would even joke about it.

Hi,

I understand where you are coming from. I also experience some physical symptoms of anxiety at times where I am not emotionally or mentally worried about something - a common one for me is a thumping heart beat and breathlessness despite being at rest. It's quite an irritating feeling.

I find a number of exercises work for me:

- close your eyes and make figure-8s with your eyes (works well for headaches).

- repeatedly forcing your shoulders down and breathing out all the air in your lungs (my favourite as my tension is usually in my chest).

- breathing in for 2 seconds and out for 2 seconds, then in for 3 seconds and out for 3 seconds, then in for 4 seconds and so on and so forth (another favourite for the above-mentioned reason, but also good for shakey hands).

- naming three things each that you can hear, see, smell and touch (for calming your thoughts).

- slowly touching the pad of your thumb to each knuckle on each finger starting with the pointer finger and going all the way to your pinky, and back in the same (reversed) pattern (good for stopping the shakes).
