Not sure if I have anxiety

Okay so I have been feeling awful lately, for the past four months I've been so unmotivated, doing little to no work in class, the bare minimum at home, beating myself up about this, constantly feeling overwhelmed/unmotivated/lazy and always tired. I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping and have been a lot more paranoid and overthinking more. To me, this sounds like anxiety but I obviously don't want to go around saying that without a diagnosis. But I'm far too nervous to go to a therapist because I'm not very open with my family and I don't want them finding out. I don't want to sound like I'm saying this for attention or as an excuse. I feel like I'm probably just lazy and shouldn't be complaining.

If you are having trouble sleeping then it follows that you will be tired during the day. Have you been to see your GP? If I were you I'd go along and see the doctor and get him to run a general blood test to see how your body is doing. If there is no physical reason for being down in the dumps then the doctor might be able to suggest a psychologist or a psychiatrist you can see. Your family need not know. Your medical affairs are your own business and protected by privacy legislation.

Hello xXBonBonXx, please let me welcome you to the forum.

You are entitled to say that you think you have anxiety but are going to see a doctor, I think everybody does this.

What I would do is write down how you are feeling and what you can't do or find difficult, then all you have to do is pass this over to your doctor, this breaks the ice so when they ask you 'how can I help you' the list you have written down explains everything.

Also mention that you are nervous, then they will take it slowly.

This is an illness, it's not looking for attention and it's no excuse and perhaps you may decide to take a family member with you when you see your doctor because they can explain this illness better.

It's not complaining at all.

Geoff.
