My health anxiety feels hopeless

Hey all,

I'm new here. I woke up about 2 months ago with a racing heart and unable to sleep more than 1.5-3 hours a night. I had blood tests done, ECG and it all came back fine. I hardly ate, stomach always felt bad, weird bowel movements and dropped 5 kilos in 3 weeks. I kept thinking that my body is shutting down and every symptom I had lead to "heart failure" or "MS" on the internet. Even my head feels funny, intermittent headaches - like tension headaches, chest sensations. I've stopped googling and checking my pulse now.

I'm on medication now and feeling better but still notice that my weight fluctuates up to 2 kilos a day. Yesterday morning I was 83.2 kgs. This morning I was 82.2kgs. How could I have lost a kilo a day? Everytime I pass a movement, my stomach churns and gurgles. I keep thinking there is something wrong with my insides yet the doctor feels my lower area every week and says it all feels fine. He may refer me to a gastro person.

Has anyone else experienced this? I just feel a little tired all the time and want my stomach to calm down. I've been off dairy, alcohol and coffee for 8 weeks but just wanted to see if anyone else has experience weird stomach and bowel movements during their anxiety. Should I be really concerned? Even typing upset stomach into Google comes up with every cancer, brain tumour - ugh, why does anxiety do this to you...

Thanks in advance and sorry for sounding like a hypocondriac.

Hi Claddam,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry that you've been feeling so helpless; health anxiety can take an enormous toll on the mind and the body. I'm glad that you've been able to trust and talk to your Doctor; hopefully he's helped to put your mind at ease knowing that all the results have come back fine.

Headaches, racing heart and not getting enough sleep are incredibly bothersome symptoms - but they do not indicate that anything serious is happening. Anxiety is also very real and very bothersome, but it is also not serious. Being able to educate yourself about all the different symptoms that anxiety produces (that mimics MS and heart failure) is so important. Some of the other symptoms of anxiety (which you may or may not know) can include increased heart rate, breathing rapidly (hyperventilation) or shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, feeling tired or weak, dizziness, choking, dry mouth, stomach or chest pain, diarrhoea, blushing, muscle tension and headaches, difficulty sleeping and nightmares. This is a huge list - but it can just show just how much physical symptoms the body shows when it's under emotional stress.

This also would explain your stomach churning and gurgling. I also know that it's normal for weight to fluctuate up to 2.2kg just during the day; just from basic human functions including digesting each meal, bowel movements, foods with sodium and water intake. It would also explain why you're feeling tired (or cutting out calcium may cause tiredness).

I hope that this info has helped put your mind at ease. This doesn't make you a hypochondriac or make what you're feeling any less real. It does mean though that instead we can work towards managing your anxiety so that you can manage the severity of your symptoms.

Hi claddam

thankyou for being brave and posting about how you feel I to understand the struggles of anxiety and the triggers of health that really send me into a spin . I've been doing some cognitive based therapy and lots of research into our minds and how anxiety takes over our rational thinking. I know I have found rumornating wich means the constant overthinking and the lies we place in our minds really does control what we feel It Has really given me an insight into how the rumornating is taking over the rational thinking. At the moment my challenges this week has been to let the fears I have flood in and then challenge what I'm feeling and what is real . I hope some of this helps I really do understand the fear from googling and the fixation we feel is very powerful . And just know your not alone 😄

Thank you all for your kind words and reassurance. It's been a stressful 2 months and think about the precious time I've wasted. Hopefully my sleep will get back to normal soon. Doc is happy about my progress. Heart rate is back to 55-60 resting which I was doing a lot of gym before this happened. Thought it may have been the magnesium supplements I was taking or the pre-workout stuff. I just didn't want to collapse or have my heart stop on me. Here's to getting over anxiety and hopefully a brighter future 😃
