Miserable Mining

Hi all I’m 30 year old man with a mortgage an beautiful fiancé and a beautiful 11 month old daughter,

iv realised iv had anxiety for about 3 years now been prescribed medication, my diet is terrible I have a bad relationship with vegetables , I barely ever drink alcohol, but I smoke a lot eat and drink way to much sugary foods a little over weight I barely get any sleep unless I’m home and my work life feels like I’m in hell

iv recently been put on a pip, in Mining it’s a performance improvement plan basically putting me over the edge. Iv been in this industry for nearly 10 years enough to know about the ins and outs this mine is pretty much on the verge of bankruptcy employees haven’t been paid for a while so iv herd as well as camp maintenance slowly deteriorating , iv left this place before on stress leave regarding an incident I was involved in and jumped through all the hoops they made me go to including visiting people’s sense which I met a councillor told them what was going on was deemed sane and was cleared to come back to work

this has made my situation worse as people sense reports back to my employer and I’m now pretty much marked as a liability ( people avoid me like the plague) and and in turn has really put me into a state of depression that is putting a strain on my work life my family’s life and relationships.

my partner doesn't understand what this industry is like with its little cliche we call (purple circles ) and having to be put in terrible conditions and tremendous pressure to get jobs done sometimes even pushing the verge of dangerous it’s all about safety when the productions running but when the production stops it’s all about production and safety flys out the window

iv pretty much lost my passion for this job and am looking for other jobs still in Mining but less paying a lot more boring but I think I’ll be happier so fingers crossed I get a call back.

this will be the third mine in iv left in 4 years because of situations my mental health puts me through and I fear it will put a huge dent in my career relationship so much my fiancé who is so stressed out and worries what I’ll do next isn’t even sure if she wants to marry me anymore, and that’s my fault for using her like a crutch but she has kept me up and going and motivated and I fear this will split us apart and I won’t be able to see my daughter like a father should be able too,

i really feel like I’m running out of options

Hey mate,

Welcome to the forums, I cant even begin to imagine how tough it is for you! My partners experience was similar to yours.

My partner was a engineer in the oil/gas industry (some fifo) and while she was extremely capable and could do the work in her sleep, the work culture/environment was extremely toxic. She too was put on a pip, only because she fell outside someones 'curve graph' despite delivering all work. She would work 80+ hours a week, weekends, had no social life, got snappy, she stress ate (then hated herself for stress eating) break down crying because she wasn't getting any help (even talking to your boss to throw around ideas made you look weak). She never sought help because she believed that she should be able to handle it herself.

She ended up quitting after her last project was the straw that broke the camels back, and she is way better off now.

Watching my partner go through all that knowing that I couldn't help (engineering is way above me haha) was brutal. You feel like your behind a window powerless to help other then offer emotional support. I did everything I could to make her life a little easier (chores, shopping etc). My love for her never waned though.

I encourage you to reach out to friends/family/even a psychologist. Opening up and just talking about it helps alot.

checkout the haka for life facebook page - the guy is a brilliant speaker (former fifo) watch the checkin videos and the 25 pushups for 25 days videos.

As hard as it is (it was hard for me) start taking care of yourself! you are important too.

I hope you get the call back!

All the best mate, were here for you.

Thanks mate well it’s official we have just gone bust which I knew was coming (I had $500 worth of shares) in the company

and the purple circle are dribbling shit about all the jobs they are already getting.

they announced it this afternoon in our pre-start meeting , I actually feel a huge sense of relief to be honest

Hi Miserable Miner,

I can see, work must be a big part of your life which is fine because I am probably like this too

Seeing as mining really affects you and considering you have done it for so many years, I think it is a good idea that are you currently looking at other job fields and don't worry about the financial part because all that will work out. Fingers crossed you hear back from someone 🙂 As you can see, there are so many career pathways out there and it is never too late for a career change. I understand it is hard when the anxiety might hold you back. There is always the option to speak with your GP or Counsellor during the week for some relief, support, guidance etc.. It is hard when we feel like we are stuck in something, believe me, I get like that but for social situations as I am not very confident in this area but it is always good for a change.

Can I just say, it is wonderful to hear you have a mortgage, a family, work and are engaged. I think, as a woman myself, these are things that are music to our ears because it means we have a successful, hardworking, personality plus man in our life.

To look after yourself, research ways you can work on your diet, sleeping habits and smoking. It doesn't matter if you don't drink much either, just as long as you don't drink excessively, I know I would be happy about that

Keep at it and everything will fall in to place 🙂

could be the new start youre looking for mate.

Hope you're well.
