job anxiety

hi,

first time poster so thanks for taking time to have a read.

Been out of work for just over 10 months. The area of work i'm interested in appeals to me on a lot of levels, I've been studying a course online and overall it's pretty good (can be challenging but i'm learning a lot which i like), I'm hoping to get it finished soon. I recently had a job interview for the industry i'm interested in and this is what is making me anxious and nervous.

Was told by the interviewer that i'd be told early in the week whether or not i'd get a second interview. i was expecting Monday or at the least Tuesday but i'm yet to hear anything. I felt the interview went well but you can never be sure with a job interview. I was told either way i'd be told and to not hear back is making me feel a bit lost. I've read various articles about calling and not calling them back myself. It's the first interview I've had in months and the actual job itself was really appealing. I'm reluctant to call back as that may go against me.

I know there will be other opportunities in the future (especially once i pass my course) however i'm feeling a bit let down as i was feeling really good with getting an interview but to still not hear back is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to get a job before Christmas or the end of the year but it probably wont happen. I'm dreading relatives on Christmas Day asking me about the situation, most i only see once or twice a year but i'm still dreading the questions coming from them.

The longer i'm out of work the worse off it will be. I know something will happen eventually but it's been long enough already and i'd rather work than go into 2018 and still be out of work. I'm trying to stay positive and do various things like eating well and doing a bit of exercise as well as studying my course. I'm just hoping that this situation doesn't drag on much longer.

Thanks for your time, appreciate it.

Hi there Andrew I sympathise. Been out of work for eighteen months but only looking for two. The dream job I got an interview for today which uses my degrees had compulsory night shift. Can’t rake my meds and do night shift. Meh. There’s heaps of threads all over the internet that say write nos on a piece of paper and one yes because all it takes is one yes and it’s normal to have plenty of knows. I hate being asked what I do because at the moment I job hunt but I used to have a really good job. Then there comes the why aren’t you doing that anymore. Lol I have to laugh sometimes because I don’t want to tell them I fell into a complete heap. I’m sure people who really care about you don’t give a damn whether you have a job or not. Also a very bright lady said to me last week that maybe the universe is trying to tell you you’re not ready yet or the jobs weren’t for you. Happy hunting and don’t be hard on yourself

Dear CG90~

I can sympathize with your position, trying to get a job can be pretty soul-destroying. All the time you are trying to get one that seems the most important thing of all.

I'm not going to go into the mental effect of rejections, the constant striving, or the causal and misleading things prospective employers do and say. I'm pretty sure you realize most of this already.

There was one thing however I did want to talk about. You had been promised word back early this week and it had not happened. You went on to say you were uncertain if you should call in case it was counted against you.

Well have a think of what it would be like to be employed in a place where you were too frightened to ask a question. I don't think in the long term you would be happy. To ask when they have not done what they have said is reasonable, after all they have let you down.

You are worth a lot, having studied to go into this area, and it is easy to lose sight of this. By all means call, and if they don't like it then you have probably saved yourself from a mistake.

With rellies -well meaning or not - who ask. If it was me I"d first explain what I"d been doing (study, applications and so on), and ask them if they know of any positions you can apply for. This not only puts their inquiries in perspective but you never know, one may know something.

I hope you have good luck and the strength and patience to wait for it.
