I am in need of some guidance and support

Hi everyone,

Ive just been going through these threads and I've become so emotional after reading the responses. You all seem to care for each other so much and I would really like some help if that's okay.

I have developed GAD over the last few months and I am terrified. I'm always nauseous, dizzy and terrified. My stomachs in knots and I'm restless. I feel like I can't go to work but I have to as they only employ a handful of people to do a lot of work - we don't really get paid very well but I think it will look good on my resume (I'm babbling, I'm sorry).

Last week the nausea got so bad at work I threw up. I have been referred to a psychologist office but I can't get up the courage to call...

I feel absolutely pathetic I feel like I've lost complete control over who I am, my doctor has now prescribed me some medication but I am paralysed with fear that my anxiety will get worse before it gets better. I am so scared about the future. I just want to be myself again but I don't know what to do.

I know I need to get help, but I'm so scared.

I really don't know how to help myself. Thanks for your time.

Hi Ma, welcome

Anxiety is a state of mind that can trick you into the opposite. A psychologist is likely to make you quite calm in the beginning of your first visit so you will feel more at ease next appointment. Try to break that barrier that is a trick! Make the appointment. You must.

Anxiety is a serious illness. It could take a long time to overcome it. I have. Its worth it. In the meantime you will mature more and life will change and you'll improve. A multi pronged approach is best so I'm glad you have reached out to this peer group. Add to this thread whenever you want when you have a problem you cant solve.

The following thread might help. Please consider all my recommendations within it. EG Muscle tensioning exercises...I still do them since 1987!! It helps me sleep and lowers my heart rate.

Dear Ma-jd~

I don't think you realize how strong you have been. I guess anxiety and similar illnesses fall in a blind spot. If you soldiered on at work with a serious physical ailment people would recognize the effort involved.

You said: "I'm always nauseous, dizzy and terrified. My stomachs in knots" and this got so bad your threw up! But you go to work. I have been in exactly your place so understand how it feels, overcoming your symptoms is no mean feat.

Going to work is in some ways harder than a visit to a psychologist. Work does not have the promise of making your anxiety better, getting the proper medical treatment does. As Tony says getting well takes time, but anxiety conditions do respond. I was a total mess, now I'm miles better. This is due to medication, therapy, lifestyle and support from my family, particularly my partner. An example of the 'multi-pronged' approach Tony was talking about.

You really do know what to do, consult with your doctor over medication and evaluate it's effect over time. Make that appointment with the psychologist - and actually turn up 🙂

I was scared of my future, in fact I did not think I had one. Now I'm living it and happy - something which at the start I would not have believed possible.

Do you have to do things alone? Is there anyone in your life to help and support you? Talk with you, maybe take you to that first appointment and wait til you come out?

Reading these threads as you have you formed the right impression. These is an amazing amount of care here for each other. We all have experience of illness, some are better, some are just starting out, and the care just comes naturally as a result.

I've not talked too much about the things you can do on a daily basis to reduce your anxiety level. Perhaps another time. I think Tony has given you enough pretty good recommendations to be getting on with.

Please know you are welcome here, we do understand

hi Ma-jd, I'm sorry that you are struggling like this, but apart from what Tony and Croix have told you, which is also very good, I just to take another angle on what's happening to you.
Since you have been 'referred to a psychologist office' means that probably your employer maybe has accepted that your GAD could be caused by working where you are, if that's the case or whether it has a large party to your illness, then you can claim workers compensation.
What this will make you able to do to take some time off work on compensation, I know that it's a small employee who are work, don't worry they will have a replacement to take your position while you are off.
They will also have to pay for all counselling outside of work, plus any medication, and please be aware that if you have anxiety then depression could be quite close behind, and I say this because long term anxiety will make you become depressed.
What you have to do is look after yourself first and foremost, nothing comes before this, it's you that you have to look after, there's no doubt about this, because if you try and help others or go to work feeling like this, then you're not looking after yourself, then unfortunately you will get worse, and that's what we don't want, we want to help you. Geoff.
