Hello Everyone,
As the title states, I'm looking for help/advice with driving. This is going to sound stupid but I'm in my 30s and I still don't have a driver's license or even learner's because of my anxiety. I have 2 fears regarding it:
1. I don't trust other people on the road, even if I do all the right things on my end it's not going to stop some random drunk driver from crashing into me.
2. I don't trust myself, I overthink things and have the fear I might crash and hurt/kill someone by accident. Mind you, I would never be the type to drive recklessly or be under the influence of anything. I'm the the type who would drive like a granny and be 'vanilla'...no offense to anyone here.
I know I'm not the only one out there with this type of anxiety, but I feel frustrated with myself not being as independent as I like to be because I don't want to rely on others or the limited public transport in my area. I feel like I would have more freedom and it would be a big step in helping myself to get back on track with life.

Hi SleepyRain,
First I don't trust other people on the road either, but I've been driving for 55 years. I've been hit twice, once while parked and once by a motor cyclist (not his fault) cause a car run into him from behind. I enjoy driving and I'd be utterly lost without it and so I'd safe it's pretty damn safe overall.
Secondly it's clear you would be extremely careful and concerned, so I think it's a safe bet you wouldn't do anything to cause an accident. I believe the odds are (officially?) that it's more likely a person would get hit walking across a road, rather than actually driving. I certain amount of concern is healthy, so I'd certainly say you have the right attitude to driving, unlike some people.

I feel you. Im 21 and besides anxiety and same fears as you, I have a disability that is common to not be able to drive, like processing information and hand eye coordination etc so I’ve decided at least for now to not go for a license and thats okay. There are other things that can help to feel more independent.

Dear SleepyRain,
I don’t believe it is stupid at all not to have your license at any age. In today’s society there are so many options for transport depending on where you live and where you want to go. Cars are also an added expense and sometimes aren’t economical for everyone.
I am someone who got their license at 21, but couldn’t afford my own car until 28. I used to have confidence to drive. Drive to work, to other people’s houses and visit a few events I wanted to. However gradually my anxiety started to enter driving, due to other people and their driving. I would internalise what happened on the road, like someone honking me or tailgating too close. I drove very responsibly and respected the road rules and others. I soon lost confidence and stopped driving anywhere but to my local shops and back. Due to a personal trauma, I haven’t driven my car now for nearly a year and a half. Non car related. To get back in it now is going to take a lot of courage and determination to face the driving world again. If only to the shops and back, it is something. I wouldn’t be able to handle driving into the city at all.
But that is the thing. You don’t need to go fast. You just need to try, if that is what you truly want. And I have since realised everyone I talk to has the same feelings about other stupid and impatient people on the road. It happens to everyone, not just me. I am not in control of other people on the road and their choices, only my own.
You don’t have to drive everywhere if you don’t want to either. You can drive locally and then take public transport to a particularly busy area or into the city where parking costs $30 anyway. Find a way that works best for you.
And like they always say, practice makes perfect. And there are so many good driving schools out there to help you prepare for your test and the road conditions today.
Here to chat if you would like,

Thanks for the support everyone and sharing your stories with me. Whenever I try something new that I feel is way out of my comfort zone, the first step is always the hardest. However, I will try and get my learner's by the end of the month and work on it from there. I heard that part isn't too hard 😅.
I hope everyone else is able to overcome their own personal things.
Have a good day/night!
