I remember when my anxiety & mood went higher than it's normal bad level for month and i discovered it's because i was thinking too much about these negative feelings by frequently responding harshly to them. I started ignoring the feelings and stopped negatively exploding to them within a few days my anxiety & mood went back down to it's normal bad level. Wasn't a full fix but wasn't a worse situation also lol.
When you respond to a single attack of anxiety/depression by repeatedly exploding or getting extremely down from the attacks, it creates a new "worse feeling" and stick around longer for days or weeks. Try to ignore the episode by not getting extremely upset, eventually the new worse feeling loses it's power eventually and goes back to normal bad feeling (better than a worse feeling). You only need to ignore few attacks, not all.
It's a hit or miss game. Sometimes you will have enough willpower/strength to ignore them. Like the bible says ignore the devil and eventually he loses alot of power.

First off let me say if you have found a method that a least partly alleviates anxiety I'm very glad for you.
I have depression and anxiety and find that anxiety takes my mind into a loop in which I either keep going over a past incident or look to future incidents and the bad ways the can turn out (or both:(. Along with that goes skewed judgment and lack of attention of course.
While I have my own techniques to try to deal with these I am always on the lookout for other measures to take. I'm not sure where "by frequently responding harshly to them" fits in. While I can feel regret and foreboding I am in for another session of these unpleasant thoughts that's as far as my attitude to them seems to go.
I accept my mind will attempt it's 'quota' of worries and try to forestall them or divert my mind elswhere using such things as Smiling Mind and BeyondNow. (While the latter is strictly speaking for suicidal thoughts it has its uses as an excellent source of distractions and mood altering items.)
Do you think oyu might explain a bit further?

Hi op and Croix.
l don't know for all either op as the depressional and anxiety swings can be so powerful and just too strong at times.
l found in those situations there was just nothing left and l've needed what energy left there was just to cope and get through, gave myself permission to feel whatever l was.
But yeah , over all though l've been using something like what you describe for over 10yrs now and in time you can literally avoid the too harder times bc you just become conditioned to gently pushing it aside earlier on before it even gets that bad.
To me it's a lot like the saying fake it till you make it. l don't push hard or force to fake it mentally bc that can leave you even weaker, that just takes too much and l need that strength. But l do do this kind of just a brush it of and just keep moving thing.
l try to still just go on with the day or wk or yr and the things l was going to do or just plain have to do, life ,work , stuff, but without forcing it - more like a gentle push of myself to just keep moving and not let in too much of the neg stuff.
lt's gotten me through 10 yrs now and over the yrs the neg and downs pass easier and faster and faster . lt doesn't mean your all happy happy , but it does mean your just not all down into the pits either and so also leaves the mind and door open for some normalness and functionality - even some happiness.
