hello reader,
Recently I've been having these 'experiences' that I think are panic attacks.
I have this fear of the ocean, I know it sounds dumb but it's really bad. The other day I was in my room and this thought came over my brain like I was on a bridge and I would fall off. I started breathing heavy and backed into a corner really hard. I felt hot and cold and like I was dying. It was the worst I had ever felt in my life. And it's happened a couple times.
Is this a panic attack?
I would really appreciate your thoughts, thanks.

Hi Jess
Sorry about the delay in responding, we are usually pretty quick.
Rapid breathing can be a classic sign of a panic attack as well as feeling like you are dying. Adrenaline can have some really unpleasant side effects that can end up resulting in a panic attack.
Ive had these awful panic for many years until my GP sorted them out.
Were you feeling dizzy or lightheaded at all?
Panic attacks are very common and actually harmless. If you keep getting these rotten feelings a visit to your GP will be a huge help to you right now.
There are many people on the forums that suffer the same as you. If you have any more information of when these feelings occur we will be able to assist you more 🙂
my kind thoughts for you, please post back when its convenient for you
Paul

Hey Jess,
Like Paul, I also think what you have described is a panic attack. If you don't mind me asking, have you been diagnosed with anxiety before? Going to your doctor (GP) about these panic attacks and your overall mental health is important. Make an appointment before Christmas if you can. If you need extra advice or support, you can talk to someone on the Beyondblue 24/7 helpline. Call 1300 22 4636.
Here is a resource on panic attacks that may be useful:
http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/infopax.cfm?Info_ID=44
Telling a close family member about what's going on is a good idea. This way, they will look out for you, and you also won't feel as alone with this problem.
Best wishes,
Zeal
