Not sure if depression or anxiety?

Hi, I am a 15 year old guy living in Newcastle and i'm not sure if i have anxiety or depression. I always get really self conscious about how i look all the time because of my red cheeks that my mum refuses to do anything about. Then I get really sad or depressed about it. Then because of high school as well there's a few episodes in there. But I always laugh with my friends all the time, not sure if it's a fake laugh or a real laugh anymore. I have totally forgotten what being excited for things feel like, when i got my braces off i didn't feel any different. I didn't get a boost in confidence at all. I always look in the mirror and point out the bad things at me. I've told mum about this and she just says "Snap out of it".

Hi Rhino, and welcome to the forum!

Based on your post, I cannot say whether you have anxiety or depression; or whether you are experiencing some problems with your self-confidence and image. If you are concerned about the way you are feeling, you could make an appointment with your GP to talk about what you're going through. Your doctor may have some good advice, and can refer you to another professional if they think you need extra help.

High school can be confusing at times, especially because everyone is trying to discover who they are and what makes themselves unique and special. I had a few boys in my year at high school with really rosy red cheeks. It is often an inherited physical characteristic, so try to refocus on other aspects of your appearance that you are comfortable with. It's good you've got your braces off 🙂 It's pretty normal not to feel that different - I know I didn't, and neither did some of my friends.

Feel free to repost on this thread 🙂

Best wishes,

SM

Haiiii.

I think the best way to resolve this is to sit your mum down and gently but thoroughly break it to her about how you are feeling. Tell her that you have been feeling really down and you would like to see a professional for it.

Self-diagnosis is not always accurate. Always check with a professional to make sure what you are feeling is serious and always find someone to talk to. Maybe you have a friend you trust or a teacher you're quite comfortable with. Have a person that you access for advice and comfort. That will help. I promise.

I may only be new here but I am here to help you ASAP.

Good luck.
