Easy Tafe course

Hey,
I won't go into my backstory but i'm a young person who suffers huge problems with depression, anxiety and most of all Addiction.

Anyway. My family is full of very hard workers, and I'm unemployed with no real eduction. I've gone into many courses before but thrown myself into really hardcore full-time computer courses with students who don't want to be there and lecturers who don't know what they are talking about (Most the time).  I do well for the first few months then anxiety and depression hit me and I fall into my addiction. This leads to a cycle in which i become even more depressed and run away from my problems even more and makes my depression and addictions so much worse!!

My Family is really keen for me to do more study. I told them the other day that I wasn't fond of the idea and they were not happy. I really just want to do an easy course. Something to give me some routine and to keep my family happy, but isn't going to stress me out and add to my depression!

Thankyou!!

Hi River's.  I think trying to please your family by doing what they want you to do causes more headaches.  What do you want to do, that is the most important question.  You'll find that when you eventually sort out what you want to do, you'll be happier than trying to please your well meaning family.  There's always going to be someone in your family who's going to want you to do what THEY want you to do.  You'll never be able to please them all as there'll always be someone that will always want you to do what THEY do.  They want you to study, have they said what they want you to study?  You want to do an easy course, what's stopping you.  I think maybe as long as you're doing something, they may stop putting pressure on you to 'follow their footsteps'.  Once you've found what you want to do, if it makes you happy, that's what counts.  I think you're anxious and depressed because you're being pressurized.  Ask them to 'leave you alone'.  Set boundaries.  You're going to have to be firm, but polite.  They're probably worried because of your obvious discomfort.  Try calling Tafe or your local high school to see what courses there are.  Have you thought about a catering course (just for the fun of it).

Hey Pipsy.
Thankyou, but being truthful i have absoloutley no idea where my future career paths lead me. My main goals and plans for the future are to just eat healthy and stay away from my addictions.

I always feel better when I'm doing study, and making my family happy is so important to me because they are all I have.

Catering course sounds fun, but maybe something in that sort of area.

Hey Rivers!

Firstly, don't EVER do something just to please somebody else - if you don't feel up to a full-time course, then don't do it! My anxiety and depression prevents me from full-time study, so I'm doing lots of part-time study both online and in radio college, and I also work part-time as well. I can't stress enough how important it is to do what YOU are comfortable with - know your limit. We're all different, and that's perfectly fine. I've always had the struggle of being compared to my academically talented twin sister; people expect me to be studying just as hard, you know? But the fact is, I'm a different person, and I experience things differently to her, and that's perfectly okay!

Have you considered seeking professional help? I have been seeing my psychologist for about 6 years, and being referred to her by my GP was honestly the best decision of my life - she was able to help me recognise my triggers, change my thought patterns, and really help my confidence levels.

Have a look at the resources BB has to offer on anxiety and depression, as they are really worth a read. Remember that so much help is avaliable! Don't be afraid, because your condition does not define who you are as a person!

Negative thoughts are just reactions to fear, and anxiety thrives on avoidance. Each day is a new opportunity to change your life. It gets better, but it's up to you, and you can most certainly do this! 🙂

Hi Rivers

Are you receiving some kind of professional help? (Psychologist..etc) When I was struggling to get into study or work my psychologist helped me to find something I could do, which is a Certificate II Animal Studies course through TAFE externally, so I can do it all online at home, as another thing she helped me to get started to be a volunteer at the RSPCA, helping care for the animals.

Of course you should only do what feels right for you, dont do it to please anyone else. I wish you well. 🙂
