Deteriorating Mental Health and Family Struggles

It's the hardest time of my life since my Depression is worse than ever. Adjusting meds and (emotional) stress has taken it's huge toll on me and my family. I can hardly function and am basically 'home-bound' until I get a little better.

My mother works and isn't available to take care of me unless she's home and when she is, we set each other off due to her extreme stress and my extreme emotional instability. 😟

it's been really tough lately because she is stressed to her maximum capacity due to taking care of my grandmother who has broken her shoulder, my severely handicapped sister and doing important work-related tasks while I am here alone (with loving pets <3) more ill than I have ever been and I feel like I am a big load on her too. She is basically looking after everyone else since my grandparents won't get home care and it is really difficult and rare to get a couple days respite from my sister. 😢

I'm quite worried & concerned about how I'm supposed to look after myself while I'm this severely mentally incapacitated while trying my hardest not to drive Mum mad as well. 😭 ADVICE PLEASE ❤️

Hi zy, welcome

Well what wonderful person you ate. Its a great asset to have care and foresight for ithers and you are showing that towards your mum.

I suggest you do the little things that will make her feel she can relax.

Coffee when she walks through the door, make an extra meal. A small gift

Hi ZyGirl,

I'm so sorry to hear about this difficult situation. While you may feel like a burden on your Mum, it's not really the case (and it's not your fault at all). I'm sure you're aware of this, but sometimes it can be hard to fully accept when you're in the midst of suffering and stress. If you don't mind me asking, are you at school still, or are you a bit older? Also, do you regularly see the doctor who prescribes your medication?

I'm 23, and have relied on my parents (especially my Mum) a lot over the years. I still only have my L plates, so Mum drives me places. However, I don't have paid work and I catch the bus to university (as my family and I live close to the city), so it's generally not too inconvenient.

I became home-bound for weeks at a time in 2012 (at the age of 19) due to an atypical eating disorder (and other mental health symptoms). I went to hospital in mid-2012 (a planned voluntary admission), and ended up staying there for 2 months rather than the expected 2 weeks. During 2013 I was recovering, and only studied two uni subjects that year. Next week I will finally finish my psychology degree, which I'm excited about. When I was severely underweight and mentally unwell in hospital four years ago, my parents honestly didn't know whether I would recover from the condition I was in. Even now they tell me how grateful they are for my recovery.

Though I caused a lot of stress for my parents and younger sister, me being well now is the reward at the end. If you can, try to think of your chronic depression in this way. Though you're very unwell now, with the much-deserved support from your Mum and from medical professionals, you can start to recover. In the future, when your mental health is improving (or has improved), you can express your gratitude to your Mum.

If you would like to talk further about your situation, you are very welcome to post back here whenever you like 🙂

Best wishes,

Zeal

I wish that I could more often like I have done in the past when I wasn't so unwell. I still do occasionally when I'm not struggling to do basic daily tasks like breathe, think, walk, shower, eat etc. I know it sounds pathetic that I'm struggling with these things amongst many more but to put it bluntly: I'm lucky to be able to function physically & mentally at all to keep myself alive let alone do favours for others at this time. 😥

Thank you very much for your input Zeal. Much appreciated! ☺️

At the end of year 10 of High School, I had to quit going since we'd been trying & trying to get me there at least a couple days a week which I could hardly manage due to Anxiety at the time. We then since arranged for me to do a TAFE course online which I have hardly touched due to my deteriorating health. 😞

As for seeing a doctor (Psychiatrist), yes I do see him quite regularly and he is helping me wean off my previously working antidepressant. In the mean time he has prescribed me a 'relaxant' to help me manage the lower dose.

I can relate about the driving aspect. Although I'm old enough for my Ls, I am simply unable to pursue driving at this stage. Work? No. I'm getting an 'income' from CLink for now. Oh and on a sort of related note, are the mentally unwell eligible for the 'DSP?' I understand this might not be appropriate to ask here and admins may remove it. So don't answer if this is so.

I'm sorry for your past mental ailments and hospital stay. You have my sympathy. 😔

Thanks for the encouraging words! ☺️👍
