Anxiety with being alone

So my parents left town for the first time in a while and I am not handling it well, I have been feeling anxious all day but tonight it all just hit me and I broke down. None of my friends responded to my messages and my normal techniques for my panic attacks didn't work. I was wondering if any of you had some tips for handling being alone? I would be eternally grateful.

Hi Valentina,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear about these panic attacks induced by being alone. Try keeping the house as light as possible (even though this does use extra electricity), having the TV on in the background (not crime shows or anything dark though), keeping pets close (if you have animals), and maybe even humming to yourself. Humming might sound strange, but I think this can help pick up my mood and distract me a little when I'm anxious. It might have no effect for you, but it's worth a try 🙂

Hopefully others will reply with more suggestions.

Best wishes,

SM

Hi SM,

Thank you so much for replying to my post, it really means a lot. I have tried what you suggested and it really seems to be helping, but like you said, I am always open to new suggestions. And thank you for welcoming me here! I hope to help others as I hope others will me.

Thank you again,

-Valentina

Maybe listen to some music or read a book I do both at once. Just having white noise seems to help me a bit, watch some YouTube.

Thank you so much for the reply, I tried out listening to music and that also helped me calm down further.

Thanks again,

-Valentina

Hi Valentina!

I understand how you feel when being left alone and awaiting friends' responses, sometimes it does become quite a challenge. I found this on a tumblr post a while back which definitely helps me out whenever I have a panic attack or my anxiety gets to me, so hopefully it'll be able to help you too!

Firstly, wherever you are, look around. Find 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. This is called grounding, as if to bring your feet back to the ground whenever you have lost sense of your surroundings.

And when you feel lonely simply distract yourself, like how the other replies mentioned listening to music, reading a book or watching TV. I find binge watching a fantastic show incredibly useful to keep your mind off of things like stress and anxiety, which can also fill the lonely void you may be feeling. But only keep binge watching to these types of situations, overdoing it can lead to handing up an assignment late, forgetting someone's birthday, maybe even your own name etc. 🙂

Maybe eventually when one of your friends respond they could help you be distracted which definitely helps in the process of calming down. I hope all goes well!
