Welcome to the forums and good on you for posting too!
There are many new people here with depression...you not on your own here
Depression is dark place to be in and yes it is overwhelming with those dark clouds above us that just wont move. Ive had depression for 21 years and my way to partial peace of mind is regular counselling every week or every 2 weeks...even with a GP that you like can be a huge step towards finding our way back to the light.
I can have an effect on our relationships as you mentioned....Once again it goes back to frequent visits to a doc so we can clean the 'dark' from our mind so to speak.
Depending on your GP's opinion medication can also help us rebuild our foundations and learn how to cope again

Knowledge us everything. Read and read some more. Seek out threads on this site and read.
Agree with my eternal friend Paul, work close with your GP.
You should not expect cure but to rein in your symptoms.
