New to the forums. Don't know what to do anymore.

Hi everyone. I'm 25 years old and I'm hoping to receive some support with my mental health. This year has been quite difficult for me.

I'm overwhelmed with thoughts so don't really know what to write. I'll say that I have problems socially and with some basic tasks. I found out I have autism in March which has helped me understand myself better but has also caused some great difficulty. I have been out of work for months and struggle to maintain friendships.

I'm using the forums to receive some real support that doesn't feel empty, but I don't want to bother the people around me anymore.

Dear J_Man89~

I'd like to welcome you here to the Forum. I regret the time it has taken for someone to reply, unfortunately the system does not always do what we want. Please rest assured the delay is nothing to do with you or the subject of your post.

You did say you had been having a bad year, can I ask if this was due to you mental health and autism, or were there other circumstances involved?

Being out of work is a horrible place ot be and I guess you are on that paper trail trying for jobs and either receiving no replies t all or a rejection. This is particularly hard to deal wiht and one can end up feeling unsure about oneself. Actually there are many applicants for most jobs and only the one position. This can end up souring your whole life. Can I suggest you keep any job related activity to one part of the day, then try and forget it for the rest, preferably doing something you like or amuses you. I use DVDs and books, they take me away from life's problems. You probably would choose other things of course.

Trying ot maintain friendships is a two way thing. The other person has to want it too, and I"m sure may wold given the chance. I guess one of hte tricks is to talk about things they like or find interesting. It is a rare freind who wants to always talk about troubles -eihter yours or theirs. Light relief is normally welcome. I found this out as I always gave in to the urge to keep talking about my problems, and that wore people out.

Do you mind if I ask if you have received medical help for your mental health and advice for your autism? I can suggest you get in touch with our friendly councilors ( or phone 1300 22 4636 or web-chat) and see how things go.
